I did a race over the weekend and noticed a weird occurrance with the results that I’d like to get some opinions about. But first, a little background…
My wife was talking to an especially nervous looking father of a young kid during the race and found out that his son, who had either just turned 14yo or was just getting ready to turn 14yo (I don’t remember which) was doing the race and that it was his second tri. The father was obviously very proud of his son (kid wants to be a Navy Seal when he grows up, is the only one of his siblings that is athletic in any way, etc.) Neat kid, proud dad. Nothing unusual.
We were talking to them after the race because my wife got a few shots of him racing and wanted to get an e-mail address to send them. I asked the kid about the race, and he was pretty excited. Told me his time (kicked my butt on the swim, BTW). I immeditately started thinking that he probably won an AG award, but didn’t say anything. (Didn’t want to jinx it or get his hopes up.)
Anyway… When it came time for the awards, they started with the youngest AG first - 15-19yo. Of course, we immediately looked over at the kid and his dad who were obviously very interested. You know were this is going, right?
Right. No award. (Even though his time was good enough.)
So, I’m checking out the race website this morning and notice that, sure enough, it states that the youngest AG is 15-19yo. Bummer, but them’s the breaks. But then, I check out the official results…
This kid is listed as having gotten 3rd in the 15-19yo AG.
What do you think of that?
Since I asked the question… My opinion is that, if you’re going to list him in the official results as having gotten 3rd in the AG, you should give him the award. If you’re not considering him for an AG award, why list him?
Opinions?
