YouCut - cutting edge, way of the future, or abdication of responsibility?

Rep. Eric Cantor’s** **(R-VA) YouCut project has been described by some as “an encouraging, if flawed, toe into the water of genuine citizen engagement”.

But Fox Business Network’s senior economist Mark Lieberman**** doesn’t see it that way, calling YouCut “a fraud and an abdication of responsibilities of elected officials”.

Leaving aside some of the other issues of YouCut (like the proposed cuts accounting for something like 0.05% of the budget deficit) I think the concept really strikes at the heart of our representative system - What are those ass clowns you people keep sending to my city here to do?

Are they supposed to merely echo their perceived voter sentiments? Are they to decide solely on their own discresion what is the best path forward? Do they only care about their electorate? Or do they need to vote Country first?

Let’s get 20 replies deep before we start thrashing around on the general merits of YouCut.

Screw that, let’s start another thread and submit a weekly winner. We’ll have the budget running in the black and widdling away at the national debt in no time.

Good idea or bad I think anytime you can get people, outside of government, involved in government and or at least discussing the real issues and coming up with solutions, that’s a good thing.

I think the ass-clowns have a dual purpose. They must represent their constituents while ensuring that the union thrives. Thus, there are many issues on which they might differ from a majority of their constituents. Depending upon the issue, they should either defer to their constituents or follow their own beliefs. I don’t think it has to be always one or the other. Ultimately, their constituents will determine if the politician is striking the right balance.
