I apologize ahead of time for my ignorance on this subject. Can someone please explain to me what the whole gurney racing thing is about.
Thanks.

Jordan,
Thanks for clearing that up. At least I had the last syllable right.
OK smart guy, so what the heck is the DERNY racing all about? All I know is, It would seems that the relationship between the rider and the derny driver must be very good or else the rider will be leaving the track on a . . . GURNEY!

I’ll go you one better
I guess the fatter the moto driver the better.
Yeah, having a hefty Derny rider certainly helps. That first pic is from this year’s Ghent six-day, which I’m sorry to be missing, having been to many. Below is a pic of the pacers between races, the guy on the right is Joop, pictured in '05, he’s the most popular pacer, and also has enjoyed the most Belgian beer. Excuse the poor picture quality, but I too had enjoyed two or three…
Here’s Joop in action, courtesy of Fat Nick:

More close up action from Fat Nick, the pacers are skilled at making for thrilling finishes, and creating the appearance that most of the derny races are not “fixed”:

I took a closer look at the Dernys:
I’d like to see Bjorn pedal up Palani on one of these chainrings:
The bikes are still relatively conventional:
But tourists don’t just go to Ghent for the bike race:
You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a great bar:
And if you want scenery with your bike racing, Ghent beats the heck out of Trexlertown:
Finally a 270 deg view of the track:
Hey BigBloke, where can I get one of those chainrings? What are they, about 112 t?
You think that’s a big chain ring? Look at this one:

In the article Doug Malewicki describes a double reduction gear system which is even better.
