I was thinking of adding yoga to my off season training. Is there a recommended type of yoga that is the most beneficial for triathlon? Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.
That’s a hard question to answer. Try a bunch of styles and let your mind and your body decide what they most crave. I find that I crave tons of stretching, so that’s what I do most often. Sometimes my solo yoga sessions are just stretching sessions, and that’s just fine with me.
I do end each session with Savasana though (that’s when you lie on the floor for 5-10 minutes). It’s nice to be still for a while.
Good luck.
I think it’s hard for a lot of us to be still for a while and I think it’s pretty important! I just wish I could do it!!
It helps to remove the distractions and put some mellow music on. If your mind wanders too much, see if you can get lost in the music, or pay extra attention to your breathing. You can do it.

I’ve recently started doing bikram yoga and enjoy it. It takes a few sessions to get used to the heat but it also allows you to get deeper into the poses (a good mix of stretching and compression). I’ve noticed a slight difference already in my running where my legs feel looser right from the start instead of needing a few minutes into the run to get going. My wife has been doing bikram for about a year and said it improved her flexibility to the point where she was refitted to a better aero position on the bike, plus she wasn’t fazed by the heat at Mooseman and IMWI since she was acclimated to it from bikram.
I see one of our local pro’s, James Bonney, my gym’s yoga classes atleast once a week. I see him as I’m getting on a treadmill or spin bike
I have been doing yoga for about 2 years and absolutely swear by it.
The two types i have found to be most beneficial to tri training are Yin and Ashtanga. Yin is very slow moving, hoding positions for up to 5 minutes. Very good after a hard workout.
Ashtanga is very much about flow and breath. It is not just a stretching class. If done correctly you will sweat and you will get a workout.
Yoga also is beneficial just for everyday life as a stress releiver and relaxer.
Hi jtris. I’ve added a yoga class to my weekly workouts and I must say that this class has been great. One and half hours of stretching and posing. A VERY tough workout, but I’ve never felt looser. Really feel like it’s opened my hips up a bit, which helps me on the bike and keeps the ol’ piroformis from acting up too much. Another benefit is that I can do it with Mrs. TriDad. Not exactly sure which kind of yoga. I think it’s Hatha. Definitely not bikram. Like someone else said, try a couple of different types if available in your area. Check out yogajournal.com for lots of good info.

LOL!! I think that would be distracting!
Funny I just finished a yoga video then got online ond saw this thread.
I borrowed some Rodney Yee tapes (also available on DVD) from my BF and have done one everyday for the last 4 days. It’s nice. I did his Yoga for Athletes yesterday, but really like the Strengthening Yoga for Beginners that I just did. It’s 20 minutes and it feels nice to stretch out. I’ve struggled with IT band and some lower back tightness and I think this will really help!
no, I wrote that word on purpose

I also like Bikram Yoga. I feel I get a really great stretch out of it. The only problem is that I sometimes come out of class very dehydrated, which makes my workout the next morning a little tough. I have started taking some Hammer Enduralytes and drinking more water, which has helped.
I dig it. Haven’t done it in years, and don’t really know that it helps all that much - but it’s cool. If you have time to incoporate yoga into your training, I say go for it!
