i love the ironyoga dvd : http://ironyoga.com/.

I am a big believer in the benefits of yoga for the weekend multisport athlete. However I have found that books and DVDs on the subject are not very good. I strongly recommend to any triathlete go to yoga classes. The smaller the classes, the better as you will get more help on you positions. Train smart, race fast, Tim

Runner’s World March 2006 has an article, Flex Time. It is only six poses but has helped me significantly. I try to do 3 sets every day. Has been most helpful in stretching my knees.

i was a total beginner 6 months ago but learned quickly with a great power yoga dvd from bryan kest. from my experience you don’t need a yoga for runners dvd. just yoga. anything else is marketing. power yoga is good because you move reasonably quickly from position to position. bryan kest’s poweryoga dvd is 3, 50’ classes from beginner to advanced. bryan says that if “you’re breathing correctly and feeling something you’re doing it right.” in other words it doesn’t matter if you’re not a pretzel - all levels are welcome and there’s no benefit to being more flexible or stronger than the person next to you.

This is a hot topic for me right now. I’ve improved my bike so much over the last 7 months yet my IM runs have not improved on anywhere near the same scale. In fact I’m getting of the bike and hitting stiff legs immediately. After a lot of evaluation my current thinking is that I am not flexible enough and any tightening of my strengthened leg muscles during the bike spells disaster for the run. My training brick sessions didn’t pick this up. Obviously there is a difference between where my body is after a 4 hour bike compared to a race time of about 6h45 at race pace.

Anyway a friend gave me some basic yoga positions over the weekend and I’ve done about 40 minutes per day since. I’m currently doing the sun salutation reps (about 10-20 per day and some specific positions for the places where I feel I need to increase flexibility. The “fold” for stretching the backs of the legs and lower back and also some spine twisting positions.

I found a great site with some great animations and explanations of the positions.

Apparently the sun salutation is one of the basic sequences that a re first learnt in yoga and provide you with a great all round program.

Anyway I have high hopes of what this will do for my IM run segment. Its now a race to get supply before Aug 26th

Good luck
