Yes, I’m mounting tubulars for the first time and YES, they are Tufos… Obviously I’m going into this with a lot of confidence! NOT!
I don’t want to use too much glue or not enough. Should I expect to use 1 tube of glue for mounting both of my new purrty H3s or 2? That’s with 2 coats on the tire and 3 coats on the rim which is what I was planning.
1st coat on the tire went smoothly, but I’m not liking how the first glueing on the rim went. I layed down a thin strip, and then went back and forth with my finger in a baggie to spread. But it ended with a bumpy, balled up gluey mess. Nothing too smooth about it. Should I start over again? Probably back and forth was a mistake which led to the unevenness.
I did this for the first time last year. I didn’t go back and forth, just ran my finger over it once to smooth it out. No problems, it was pretty easy, just made a small mess on the floor of the laundry room (for which I got yelled at). The tires seated fine, the glue dried with no problems and I had no issues after that. I just pulled them off yesterday, I must have done a good job because it was a bitch to get them started.
use goo gone to get the glue off. It takes a couple of minutes for the glue to get soft, but soak the corner of a cotton rag and wet the glue. Let sit and then rub old glue off. Also, remount the tires when the procedure you used is still fresh in your mind. You’ll learn alot about what you need to do better by doing it twice in a row your first time - E
Tufos have a base tape that absorbs a lot of glue. Next time while laying down the thin strip, spread it out as you go. The contact points on the sides is critical, the middle not so important. By the time you put a thin strip all the way around, the first parts will be very tacky as you discovered. Find a tape that is compatible with your rim and put it on the sidewalls so that after the glue is dried you can remove the tape and the glue as well. This eliminates to need to touch up with noxious chemicals. Or use more glue on the bad glue, with the new glue softening up the bad glue.
For a first time glue job, for triathlon wheels, I normally go through a minimum of 1 full tube of glue. For road wheel’s I may go a little more heavy.
For wheel’s that already have a glue base 1 tube glue front and back…
