Yet another tubular mounting question

Just reglued my tubies last night. One tire (conti podium) had an inch or two section of just slight separation of base tape and tire (3-4 mm). I shot some regular tubie glue underneath and mounted as usual. Kosher? Suicidal? I have visions of the base tape separating from the tire at high speeds now. As an aside, it sure was a real B*#@* getting the tire off the rim. I can see a real struggle if I ever have to do this in a race.

We like to use “Fast Tack Trim Adhesive (model #8031)” to glue the tire and strip back together. Its quite common for conti’s-tape to start peeling away. Just make sure that the strip/tire junction is glued together.

  1. Pack a generous amount of glue/adhesive in there.
  2. Then, put wheels on your bike and ride in a straight line…very slow, while standing(anyway to add weight on the wheels to help seat the tire).
  3. Now, you can get a rag and dab any excess glue that has squeezed out of the tire/rim.
  4. Don’t max out the air pressure while doing this, just inflate enough to make it spongy. That way, the tire will glue better.
  5. Let it sit over night and then top-out the air pressure. Re-glue it some more if necessary.

Thanks, that is basically what I did, but it sure is nice to get insight from someone who knows what they are doing.

You can get actual base tape glue. Try worldclasscycles.com for this product.

I do not want to step on toes here, but there are several studies that suggest that the 3M mastic-type adhesive recommended on this thread is NOT to be used on tyres. It is an automotive weather strip adhesive. I am not certain if it is true or not, but I won’t touch the stuff when several people (including a university study) says it is not a good thing on a tubular tyre.

I agree with avoiding the fastack. Everything I have read has said to avoid this like the plague (including the Zipp website) when gluing tubulars. It’s funny though that many people obviously have had good results with it and continue to recommend it. I went into my local tri shop and thats all they have used to glue their tires for the past ten years with absolutely no problems according to the owner.

I think it has something to do with the ingredients being incompatible with the base tape glue, if I am not mistaken. If I am, then I wish to be enlightened.

I like bunnyman’s solution for this. In lieu of that using regular Conti tubular cemet sounds like the safest bet to me.

Be advised: While many people have had fine results with, and recommend 3M Fastac it is clearly labelled on the packaging that it is only for automotive trim use. In other words- 3M has determined it does not work for gluing tubulars. Given that they are one of the largest companies in the world, I would presume that if they could sell it for gluing tubulars, they would not take the trouble to label their packaging to the contrary. So use with caution I suppose.

Good luck!

I agree, use what is “safe” and recommended.

Its just interesting because this is what many professional track sprinters have demanded us to use. We used “Gorilla Snot” on quite a few members of the Canadian and U.S. Olympic team. But granted, these are men and women who are hitting 45 mph out of the turns and they cannot risk their tyres rolling whatsoever at those speeds.

But in tris, use glue that one can tear the tyre off if necessary due to a flat. And don’t mount tyres anywhere near carpeting!!!
