If your car was stolen with the doors unlocked and the keys in the car(running) would your insurance cover it? Here is a simple solution LOCK your doors! So when someone steals from your unlocked car will you complain about that too??
Who said anything about the engine running and keys being in the car?
There have been occasions where I deemed it less risky to leave no valuables in my car and the doors unlocked than to lock the doors. That way, if a criminal wanted to see if there was anything worth stealing in my car he/she wouldn’t have to break a window or damage the lock linkage to do so. Bottom line is that the car is MY property and leaving the doors unlocked isn’t endangering anyone.
I have another friend who liked to camp. When at the trailhead he would leave his doors unlocked and the glove compartment open. The only items in the car were expended shotgun shells and an empty liquor bottle or two. Car was never vandalised.

I guess you parents did not teach you the line between right and wrong did they. If it is not yours dont take it!! Sound’s like something some liberal do gooder would say " They left the door unlocked so they were just asking for it. It’s not the fault of the poor little boy with no upbringing. Let him go." Get real!!
Lets remember in some state’s it is perfectly legal for a cyclist , tri athlete whatever to come to a complete stop ( maybe even rolling stop.) and proceed safely.

Absolutely. But I think you and I would both agree, that isn’t what happens 9 times out of 10. Especially on the manly testosterone filled club rides.
That is true. I learned where to pick my sprints. If it is to a stop sign I let up 20 or so feet before. Thats where my race ends. I admit I have blew through a stop sign or tried to get through a yellow light. I did look when I blew through the stop sign, what were chances of the car and the house being the same color ? Slowed me down alot and I am not talking about the overall average for that ride

Lock your doors? Really? Why didn’t WE think of that? Thanks! You’ve really shed some light on the subject

No.
However, if an insurance company can get a law like this passed and the city can use it to fill the coffers, that I will complain about. Fortunately where I live they haven’t yet kissed the insurance companies collective asses that much.
First; sorry to hear about the cyclist being hit near LSU.
Second; most, probably 99% of police officers are not familiar with the laws that protect and/or restrict bicyclist.
Third; we live in a “Me” world. It is all about me and my agenda. Distracted drivers rear end tractor trailers on the roads every day. They surely will not see a bicyclist if they can not see a tractor trailer.
Fourth; In my limited experience over the past year of riding about 25% of driver’s think that bicyclists do NOT belong on the road. It makes me nervous every time I ride but I gotta do what I gotta do.
Last; on the side subject of locking your cars in Montreal. I work in St. Louis, Missouri. The metropolitan police have put out a public statement instructing people to remove ALL valuables from your vehicle and leave the doors UNLOCKED. Car break ins are so rampant they figure at least you won’t have to replace the window if you leave the car unlocked. Insurance companies in the US will lose in court if they refuse a claim because your doors are unlocked.
I can’t speak for others who have been hit, I can however speak for myself (and I’ve been run off the road) and Mike (the rider who was hit here in BR.
I am very conscious of vehicles and my responsibilities as a cyclist. I look like a strobe of colors when riding day or dawn or dusk. I also know Mike is very responsible as a cyclist having been on rides with him.
I give this guy no benefit of the doubt since his actions immediately following (leaving Mike in the ditch to die for all her knew) wipe away the opportunity to give this driver the benefit of the doubt.
When I was run off the road it was by the third car in a row of speeding cars that were stacked one by one on each-others bumpers. The first car saw me and gave me a great deal of room, the second can not so much because in my opinion he barely saw me because he was riding so close to the first car bumper and speeding . . . The third car I think, didn’t see me until he was on top of me because he again was speeding and right on the bumper of the second car.
His mirror grazed my left arm and I went flying.
I’m not sure what the answer is, because I know accidents will happen . . .
MY MAIN ISSUE is - the attitude of people who are aggressive towards cyclist or even feel that when a cyclist is hit that we somehow should have expected to get hit . . . I am having a hard time grasping that set of ideals.

Yep, personally I have given up the big weekend group rides. A large peloton rolling on open roads is basically a rolling motorist rage generator. I’m not interested in being a part of the many confrontations and occasional carnage I’ve seen over the years. Nowadays I either race, ride alone, or ride with just a few close friends who I know don’t ride like idiots. And I roll out as early as possible.
