I lost three of these in my last four races. There must have been 50 of them over the railroad tracks at St. Anthony’s this year.
You can buy a kit that included rubber bands, a straw and the mesh.
Does anyone know of a place that just sells the yellow mesh?
Put a piece of electric tape over the edge of the yellow thingy. It does not interfere with the re-load. I have yet to lose one since my wife came up with this idea.
I know its been said before, but walk to the shampoo aisle of walmart and buy a small luffa (sp?) for $0.99. Run it once through the dish washer, no idea what kind of crap might be on it. Then wedge it in your aero bottle, no ejections, much less of the water park splash affect, and you can still refill it. I did this beginning of this season and haven’t turned back.
Another option is to take a clear plastic tie, and fasten the sponge to the bottle. You won’t loose it, and you can still flip it out to clean it and what not. I’ve had it like this for a while, works great and you can’t even see the tie down (just cut a little slit in the front plastic cover for the top whole - none tube side).
That’s because your not using it correctly… I’ve owned about 4 of these bottles over 20 yrs. and never lost one - yet.
All you have to do is unroll the mesh thingy… and loosely wad it up in a ball and stuff it into the bottle without compressing the wad. If it is a big, loose wad of mess, it should stay in the bottle.

BTW, you’ll find a ton of these things on the road a IMAZ as well… rough roads and lack of knowledge as to how to use the yellow thingy.
I actually use a sponge filter from an aquarium. It is a it is long and narrow so I basically just twist it into place and it works perfect. It cost about $2 as well. I didn’t loose my yellow mesh but it needed to be replaced as I couldn’t get it clean enough. What I did with mine was push the straw through one of the holes in it and it never went anywhere.
Comment on IM AZ brought back the repressed memory.
There must have been dozens of those things on the road. On my last loop I had spectators trying to hand them up to me. No idea why they thought I needed it unless it would be a wind repellant that day.
I just had to mention that I laughed at your post because when I read the “subject” before I read your post, I thought to myself, “damn, there were like 100 of those things on the bike course at St. Anthony’s. i should tell him to go there next year to pick one up.” And then you mention St. Anthony’s. I think I even saw one of the aero bottles on the course. With longer arms, I could have assembled an aero bottle from the course.
I just don’t get the fascination with these bottles - tried one, didn’t like it, I just go with one bottle on the frame for racing, behind the seat cage to carry extra while training.
Hearing the complaints about the “thingy,” I immediately went to the auto parts store and bought a car wash sponge when I got my aerodrink. It cost about a dollar, maybe 2. I cut the one sponge into about 4-5 circular pieces a little larger than the opening to the bottle. I’m still using the first one I started with. It doesn’t splash and has never fallen out – even once when my bike was knocked over with a full bottle. To re-fill, I pull it out with one hand, then use the other hand to refill, and put the sponge back. You can do it without coming out of the aero position with about twenty seconds practice.
Works for me. You do need to make sure you wash the sponge out after each use, though.
