YAQP: What would you pay for a Giro or Bell TT helmet?

YAQP (yet another quickie poll):

  1. What would you pay for a Giro or Bell TT helmet (re: new ones at the Tour)?

  2. What do you think they will sell for when they are released?

I’m thinking 1. $200, 2. $280

(my super-heated LG Prologue was $99 bucks, as I wipe the gushing sweat out of my eyes after today’s TTT)

I just hope that they’re genuinely more aero. I’ve read that covering over the holes on your regular helmet will give you about the same. I’ll want to see some data before laying my money on the table.

well, personally I wouldn’t buy the ones at the tour…becuase I’m not at the level where it’s really going to make a difference. In fact, I’m sure this applies to practically all of us here (no offense to anyone, it’s just my opinion that unless you’re one of the top in the world in your race sport, things like this don’t make that much difference). But, I get that it’s fun to have the stuff anyway. I bet they sell them for 250+.

In any case, after having a head smashing crash this past spring, you better bet I buy the best helmet I can. If it weren’t for that helmet, I would be a goner, or a vegetable for sure. It was scary!

Yes the new LG is sweet looking. I think they are going to list around $160 or so.

The ones used at the Tour by Bell and Giro did not pass certification to be used in the states. Giro may develop one that is legal here.

Jaylew is right, it would be crazy to spend any money on the new Giro/Bell aero helmets if they are not legal.

“I’ve read that covering over the holes on your regular helmet will give you about the same.”

That’s what John Cobb says, and I take everything from him as gospel. I taped over all the holes in my Pneumo, and it was tough to do, but a quick A/B test with another Pneumo sans tape, and I could feel and hear the difference in the air turbulence.

If you find some photos of Steve Larsen from last year, you’ll see that he taped the vents on his Rudy.

Problem with that is that it looks goofy. I’m all about style!

My first born… Oh wait, I don’t have any kids…

TIBBS first born!!

I’m hoping for $225, but I’ll pay whatever. The LG hat is kind of dorky, but now that they’ve got silver and red, that might go OK with the TSR toggs…

THAT IS IF HID EVER GETS THEM HERE!!!

I’d pay 100-150 tops. More than that, and I’m looking into making my own…

The new Uvex T-Mobile is using has a msrp. of over 300 euros, but I am yet to see one for sale. Had the opportunity however to see one in action in the velodrome last week as there was a guy (who happens to hang around with the T-Mobile guys) who borrowed one for the state TT champs. It’s quite sweet, but I’m not laying the price of a new Renn wheel for it. Rather buy a new Pneumo and have it meticulously taped over.

BTW…I still love my old Met Pac IV (the old fairing). Damn regulations… (because of this I might crash on my next TT and have my brain saved from being smashed because of the very helmet I complain about)

I will not pay for it anything because I prefer my head to be cool. In a long distance race I am not moving at very top speeds and I believe that my overall performance will be better if I feel less hot.

If you look at Gary Tingley TT results you will see that it is not going to help him either. Many of my training partners use a basic Giro helmet and a Giant TCR or similar road bikes with a clip-on and guess what, their TT times are significantly better than Garry. This guy is obsessed with buying expensive aero equipment, and anything made from carbon fibre. He loves his kit, he has the money – good for him.

I think that Cervelo guy has a good attitude – always analysing the cost-benefits before he spends his cash, and if he can get the same performance for less money he goes for it. In contrast, the attitude of lets copy the celebrities from the tour is childish.

yeah the new LG looks real nice. I saw a $180 list on it. Now is it actually shipping?

If it was good? $300.

Cousin,

There’s this clear plastic insulation that looks like saran wrap. You tape the perimeter and then blow it on and barely notice that it’s there. It’s designed for windows in winter in colder climates as extra insulation. Don’t know if you can get it down there in sunny California but and harware store up here in the Great White North will carry it.

I remember having to put that shit up every damn winter. That’s how I learned not to run 2 hairdryers off the same outlet in an older house (blows fuses).

Thankfully I live in Vancouver now, and leave my windows open year 'round.

After recent experience, I would be worried about the shock absorbing capabilities of those helmets.

I just bought a new Met Stradivarius, and the major reason is that it looks like it could protect my large head in the event of another calamity.

So, no aero tear-drop space-balls helmet malarkey for me my fine feathered friend.

where can I see the new LG Rocket on the web?

its in this months triathlete mag.

Thanks, I’ll look for the stuff. The packing tape looks rather silly, but I did have my fastest bike split ever this afternoon. Don’t know whether it’s the helmet modification or the Rotor Cranks. Couldn’t be me, 'cuz I’ve been derelict in my training!

Depends on the graphics. If it looks dorky, I wouldn’t buy it. If it looks pro, I’d pay up to $200+ for it. I’ve gotta like it, ya know. I hate the LG aero lid. Had it, hated it.

Where?? I just looked and can’t seem to find anything???

Thanks!!
