Yakima rack install help

Hello,

How do you get the damn end caps off the bars to seperate them? Before I resorted to brute force tactics thought I would ask.

TIA,

Brian

Twist the caps and they should just pop off. When I say ‘pop’ I mean that your hands will be blistered and sore. It took some working but I finally got them off on mine. Good luck.

I am not sure I can twist. They are side by side in a dual cap.

Brian

huh? We’re talking about the crossbars, right? What do you mean side by side? Like a figure 8?

Perhaps if you have a heat gun you can heat up the bar then drip some cold water on the caps. I think they’ll pop off. Or maybe it’s cool the bar and use hot water. I’m pretty sure it’s the first way. Be careful not to heat it up too much to melt the plastic.

Hello,

I called REI where I got them and he said they should just slide off. They are still in the dual caps that hold the two bars together when you purchase them. He said someone must have dropped them on both ends to wedge the caps on. I thought it was requiring way more effort than necessary!!

Brian

Did you get them off? Could you cut them off with a zip tool or a Dremmel? I’d say take them back to REI and let them figure it out. I don’t think mine had the same cap as you’re talking about. Sorry.

Had same problem. Took piece of hardwood as a punch and went around the twin/cap hitting the wood w/ hammer. I remember using the corner of the wood inbetween the two bars to hit the middle of the twin/cap too. Very little damage. Micro-damage. The other end was easy, so I know it was dropped. Assume yours was dropped. If you got it from a dealer close by have them remove the twin/cap. Don’t recommend cutting or heating. You don’t want the metal or the plastic damaged or the tower will not be easy to put on.
