So Xterra split up the East and Northeast region and I’m glad to see a bunch of races being added (especially in NY). I’m trying to plan my season and pretty much other than the dates and the event names I can’t get much info on the new races. Anyone out there familiar with the new races being added. Distances? Will any be a “Championship” kind of race like Richmond? I’m intrigued by the Garnet Hill and Syracuse events. (Already registered for French River because it’s local). Any info would be great.
At Stoaked last year I know what of the racers (I will leave his name out for now) was saying he is working on a championship race in the Boston area, more than likely Blue Hills. I was really hoping he pulled it off this year, but it seems like it did not happen. I am really glad there are more events in the NE this year. My view is it can only be a good thing.
There are quite a few XTERRA’s in NE this year.

and a couple coming up in Ontario Canada with Hawaii spots.

Exactly, for the first time I have the problem of trying to figure out which races to sign up for. Definitely a good problem to have.
I’m on the fence for Stoaked at the moment. All my friends decided to get married in August and trying to figure out the travel schedule is tough.
Same boat. Really excited to see the additional races in the NE! Want to do them all. My plan was to race road tri’s May thru July and switch over to Xterra from July to October.
Looks like it will be a full season!!
The list as I see it (looking only at NY and states to the north and east):
French River
Garnet Hill
Sky High
Stoaked
ASP
Garnet Hill is the only one I haven’t been able to find much info on. All of the others have working websites the last time I checked.
White Mountains Tri and Mad River Endurafest (Waterville Valley) are both advertising off-road races but the RD’s have confirmed to me that neither will be “Xterra” branded (at least for 2014).
And neither of the race sites give much info yet on their off-road events (like race distances or where the course goes).
Was really hoping to have a Championship level race in New England this year.
Not that going to Richmond is so bad, though it would be nice to have a Regional Championship that was a little less mid-Atlantic and a little more Northeast.
So I actually contacted Xterra. Here’s what they said:
-No Regional Champs in the Northeast (Richmond is the only option that’s relatively close)
-Garnet Hill is going to be relatively close to the Champ distances with about a 1k swim, 30k bike, 10k run (all are approx based on trails)
-There is a race in Syracuse but its going to be one of the shorter ones think like 800m swim, 10 mile bike, and an 4.5 mile run
Here’s another in upstate NY in late September:

I found this on Garnett Hill, really nothing to go off of yet. http://www.adkracemgmt.com/
Anyone know anything about this race: http://www.mramultisport.com/frenchriver/
.
I don’t know much about the French River race, but I believe it is the location of the Hodges Dam/MA State Champ MTB race. I’ve heard the trails are pretty good.
I am also excited about the growth of Xterra’s in the Northeast; however, I would selfishly like to see one or two more races in within 2-3 hours of the Boston area. I think there is a ton of potential for a motivated race director to put together an Xterra Cape Cod. Both of the Cape’s major trail networks are located next to quality freshwater ponds. It sure doesn’t hurt that the the Cape would make an ideal destination for regional racers looking to bring the family along.

That’s more than I’d been able to find.
The active link from the adkracemgmt site lists distances of 1k swim, 30k bike and 10k run. On the long end for a points series race but consistent with what Kevin posted above.
All I’d been able to find on Garnet Hill were results on the xterraplanet site from a race of the same name held about 10yrs ago (IIRC it was from 2001 thru 2004 and then again in 2007).
Hopefully more info on the event will be posted soon.
Still not able to find info on XTERRA (yes guys it is supposed to be ALL CAPS Syracuse.
Anyone?
Your post got me to go and look at the schedule on XTERRA’s site.
I see Syracuse listed for Aug 17 but the link isn’t active yet.
I don’t know anything more about the race (I did a quick search and came up with zilch).

bringing this back to the top with French River coming up.
The Garnet Hill page looks live. There was a race there (Xterra) in the early 2000’s. It was super fun. Gorgeous lake, challenging bike (not too tech but hilly) and tough run.
Hope to see some of you at the races.

Here is a new one.
The Garnet Hill Race is legit. Being run by Adirondack Race Management guys. They’re the same group that runs the Lake George Triathlon Festival and they do an excellent job. Should be a good race. Lots of good Xterra choices this year for the Northeast.
Cheers.
I am pretty pumped about the Garnet Hill one. Excellent company from what I hear and the trail reviews for Garnet Hill sound sweet with lots of climbs/descents and interspersed singletrack. Can’t wait to give it a go.
Xterra Syracuse is the championship distance (but still only worth series points). It looks pretty legit though. I’ve planned enough travelling with Richmond and Garnet Hill in hopes of going to Utah to justify another trip though. It’s encouraging to see a full distance one popping up and since it is in a “large” city, maybe we’ll see a Northeast championship in a year or so. Hopefully it draws enough attention/participants so it comes back next year. It sounds like an awesome course.
I’ll second the idea of having a legit regional championship length Xterra (with a championship point scale) in the northeast.
Don’t know the Syracuse area but I hope the race sticks and maybe turns into a championship venue.
Richmond is a terrific course and location (especially for all the mid-Atlantic racers) but it would be nice to have a champs race a bit closer to home – like actually in the Northeast region (NY + New England).
