This would be for the 2013 race year, as this year is pretty full already. Has anyone done one of the Epic length Xterra races? Being in the great white North would make Iron Mtn more feasible, but would like to hear from anyone that has done Rustman as well.
Hit up runitaly for info on the Rustman Epic. He did the double last year (long course on Saturday, short course on Sunday). He really enjoyed it. Also, the race organizer is AWESOME! Super cool guy and they do a great job on putting on the event.
I did the short course which is essentially one loop of everything they do on Saturday (long course is 2 loops for swim, 3 for bike, 3 for run). Fun trail but not super super technical. I plan on doing both races in 2012.
I would imagine the courses to be a little tame, though that is a disadvantage to me. The double must make for a great Monday back at work.
and if you have anyone that doesn’t ride the trails, Piney Hills Cyclists are having a tour on May 5th. There are 10-62 mile options on nice quiet roads. not much info up yet, but will be found at www.steelsports.net. Last year was our first year and we had just over 100 cyclists. The park is a great place for families to hang out while the cyclist in the family is out on the road. Plus, having Xterra in town will make for more fun to watch.
I did Rustman last year and it was great, really nice park and trail. The race organizer was really cool and very helpful if you needed anything. The field was only about 40 people total so very small compared to most road tri’s, I really enjoyed the whole experience and will be there again this year!
Hey where are all you guys from? I’m planning on doing the Sunday race. Can anyone give me a comparison of the trails in Ruston to Kincaid lake trails? I’m in Lafayette; I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get up to Ruston before the race to try out the trails.

Ruston is not very technical, thus it’s a fast course. It has a nice layout. Trail has one epic downhill where photographer always waits. Trail has many roots which are often slick from humidity- easy to wipeout on some turns if not cognizant of the wet roots.
No comparison available in LA except for Bodcaw Bayou which is similar to Ruston.
I have done the Rustman every year along with the shorter race the next day.
The race was much better last year with the changes they made to the run course.
Fast course, so run some fast tires. Some pretty fast peeps out there as well.
It is a great weekend for Racing, Fred and DLT always throw a great race
I have raced there every year for the last six years.
Thanks my man, I’m just getting back into the MTB. I was in Austin for 8 years and haven’t ridden much offroad since moving back home. Where is Bodcaw Bayou?

Bodcaw Bayou is about 20 minutes East of Shreveport. There is about 15 miles of single track comprised of three loops.

I live in NH and am looking to do a race/vacation with one of the Epic length races. I am still leaning towards Iron mtn because October would be easier to prepare for through the summer than the May date through winter, but so far people are giving good support for the Rustman in May…I just may be slower for that one. Again this would be for next year 2013.
It spelled Bodcau. North East of Shreveport.
Ruston trail is fast. It has a little of everything with a few technical sections, switchbacks, single track, jumps, lots of ups and downs. Ruston is a harder trail than Kincaid because of the roots and rocks, but if you can only train on Kincaid you will do fine at Ruston. The Monkey Trail in Shreveport is great ride also.
The trail is located inside Lincoln Parish Park and is a great place to spend a weekend. It has a nice lake with a sand beach, camp sites, motor home sites, showers and bathrooms, and several playgrounds.
the course is not to technical, if i can complete the bike section with only 5 MTB rides in the last 18 years and only crashing once into a tree, if you are a strong rider you should do well. there are some really fast sections, and then there is the bat cave very steep climb near the end of the bike loop.
overall not technical, trail surface is very good, water temp was wetsuit legal but not necessary. would love to do it again but will be doing IM TX a few weeks later, probably will go and hang out and train on part of the course
