Hi guys,
I am a triathlete from Germany and I will stay in the Tahoe-area from December 25 - January 5.
I would like to do xc-skiing and some downhill.
Do you have ideas, where the best places are and where to rent a cabin. Are there good trails for xc-skiing?
Sorry for my bad english and greetings from Germany

Royal Gorge is nice. The largest XC ski resort in Norht America. Also check out Tahoe Donner XC, Tahoe City XC and Spooner Lake. For Downhill, I’d reccomend you try as many as you can, each has it’s own unique features. Northstar is nice. They have a fast pass lift ticket that cost more but you go to the front of the line every time. Worth it if you are coming so far to ski here. I enjoy Squaw Valley but only on weekdays because on weekends it’s just too crowded.
Snow quality will be the crap shoot for you, some years it’s good, others it really bad. I’ll most likely be out XC skiing that week too.
Go to the web page called VRBO.com there are a million places there. Here is the link:

Royal Gorge is my favourite place in the world to XC ski at, and I come from a place which is covered in snow 4-5 months a year. Make sure you ski out to Point Mariah and Devil’s Peak. The snow conditions and grooming are the best I have seen anywhere in the world.

And if you want to rent a cabin near Royal Gorge, look for the Serene Lakes or Donner Lake areas. I expect they’d be less expensive than those closer to Tahoe. But… the week after Christmas might be the most expensive week of the year, so make reservations now and prepare to pay a lot! There are also several small hotels on Donner Lake and in or near the town of Truckee. I stay at the Holiday Inn Express in Truckee when I race the Donner Lake Triathlon in the summer. It’s bland, but new and smoke-free.
