Yep, it’s a pretty wild design! I’m working the Fischer demo at the Birkie on Friday and will get to see these weird-looking things first hand. I’m very interested to hear the skiers’ comments.
It’s really all about minimizing swing weight. All the weight at the extremities makes the ski tougher to sprint with. I can’t see it adding much value outside of the sprint events and if you get some new snow on top, that tip becomes largely ineffective cause you have snow riding through the hole slowing down the front of the ski (I would think).
The real place to minimize swing weight is in the ski boot. Even the top end Salomon SLAB boot that I race in is a boat anchor…do these guys not learn anything from the world of running shoes?. I understand you need support and control and warmth, but there is room to reduce mass substantially in the boot.
