XBox, Mag Trainers, and Makeshift Cycling Shorts

  1. It is possible to play Madden 2004 on XBox while riding a stationary trainer. Your timing routes may suffer bit with the touch passing not being what it once was, but it’ll get better as the game goes on. It’s amazing how “still you can ride” while riding at a good clip. Note: sweaty hands are a problem.

Note #2: Even with M2K4, the stat-trainer is boooooring. I need scenery.

  1. I’m trying to find a way to accuraterly find the right resistance on my trainer. Outdoors a ride a nice 14-mile (East 19 Hwy) course in about 50 min …~16mph (or so). That includes graded roads (not very smooth), multiple hills (8 total), turns, turnarounds, etc. On my trainer, even with light spinning (1 click down from “middle”), the cyclocomputer said I went 20.62 miles in 55 minutes. I guess maybe that is actually correct since there’s no wind resistance and the efficiency is increased due to not having rough roads or hills, etc (wind around here is always 10-20mph).

What is generally done with the resistence on mag trainers? How is it used effectively?

  1. I stopped the ride, not because my XBox game was over, not because my legs were tired, but because it hurt “down there”. I was wearing swim trunks (non-net-liner)… if for no other reason than I seem to have about 25 pair. The post-scrotom region (yes, even I laughed at the goofy description) wasn’t feeling too well, and I need to get some cycling shorts.

Problem is, I also need to pay for 5 races, buy a wetsuit, etc … so I was wondering if there are any “makeshift” cycling shorts that one can make/use just for training, or until cycling shorts move up the priority list. I never really noticed pain “down there” riding outside, but inside I sure do notice.

Any tips?

I apologize for making training threads on back-to-back days. I hope it doesn’t start a trend. wink

Get a cheap pair of cycling shorts from Nashbar. $20.

Which do you recommend?

Don’t know. I haven’t bought any of the nashbar brand. But for $20, the Monday short is a pretty good deal. I wouldn’t expect them to last too long, but they would be an improvement over swim trunks. I ordered a pair of bib shorts from Performance that should be in today. Normal price was $70, but they are on sale for $45.
