At the risk of fueling the belief that it is too dangerous to ride a bicycle outside, here is a news story and video from the weekend that happened here. The guy on the bike was coming to a stop at the corner (he had the red light) and was commuting to work. Note that he was doing everything correct, just like most of us. Warning - the video is unedited and very graphic. - If you don’t care to watch it, the biker is on the right side of the road going away from the camera coming to an intersection with a red light. An SUV has the green light and is going through the intersection from left to right. A Dodge Charger coming at the camera (who has the same red light as the biker) runs the light, hits the SUV, and the SUV goes sideways toward the camera, hitting the biker and pushing both of them into a store front.

There is nothing you can do in a case like this. If a pedestrian had been at that spot - same result. If I had been sitting in my Miata at that spot I might have survived. If I was sitting in my SUV probably, but that was a very high energy crash.
