Wrench question: Vision extension shift cable runs

I’ve a P3 with stock Vision extensions. I will be recabling the shifters next week, and have seen several ways to run the cables. On Cervelo’s site, the cables run in the extensions, exit out the oval holes, and run directly to the downtubes.

Two other ways I’ve seen this done is to run the cables internally at first, exit the extension via the oval holes, and up over the basebar and then to the downtubes. This way seems to have the cables run tighter (and a bit more aero) to the frame as long as there is not too much slack in cables (for turning the handlebars all the way left and right).

My LBS is recently recommending NOT running the cables internally in the bars at all, rather run them initially under the bar tape but then OVER the basebar, which bugs me as there seems like a bit of clutter going on with cables around the cockpit area. Their reasoning is that this method causes less friction and the eventual kinking in the cables as they exit the aerobar exit holes. I buy the explanation, but I don’t keep the cables on forever so the long-term shifting degrading doesn’t seem like much of an issue.

What is your preference?

The second technique is the cleanest I’ve seen with the vision bars. You could also run the cables underneath after they exit the oval hole and zip tie them to the bars to hold them up there. Never had any shifting issues with the internal routing but if you’re concerned use the Teflon coated cables.

I like the cleaner look to keeping them in the bars until the exit holes. And I look into the cable housing recommendation. Thanks.

seriously?? kinking??? do they intentionally bend them to 90 degrees.

I don’t know what to say
