Wrench Q - rear mech with no barrel just inline

Quick question. I have a SRAM rear mech with a broken barrel adjuster.
I am building a new bike with it and have inline adjusters at the stem. Can I get away with just the inline as I am on a budget so don’t want to buy a new mech, or a new barrel as SRAM charge about £15 for this!
Maybe if I put the adjuster down by the mech instead?

It does not matter much where on the bike your adjuster is. It could be on the RD, or it could be inline most anywhere on the cable. As long as it is installed correctly and on the right cable and is accessible to you, it’ll get the job done.

Having it right on the derailleur just makes adjustment easier on the workstand.

sram mtb rear mechs have been without an adjuster for as long as I’ve been using them, doesn’t seem to hurt the performance there.
