Wrench q re: Cassette installation

Last night I installed a 10sp Ultegra cassette on a 404 that was previously running a 9 sp cassette. I had no problems getting the cassette off and on, but when I put the wheel back on the bike, the cranks didn’t spin freely backwards. Instead, it engaged the wheel.

I think I did everything correctly, but was hoping for some insight from the mechanics (both home and professional) on the board. This thread seems to indication that there shouldn’t be any problems in terms of compatibility:

Thanks in advance.

did you include the spacer behind the cassette (the one that is required when a 10-speed cassette goes on any rear hub except a dedicated shimano 10-speed rear hub) ?

Did you remove the spacer required for 9 speed cassetts?

On my 9 speed, there is a metal spacer nearest the hub, and the cassett goes on after that. If you didn’t remove that before putting on the 10 speed (as the 10 speed is bigger then the 9) and screwed it together, you have a locked hub.

Dont ride it, fix it.

I figured it was a spacer based on the posts I’ve read using the search function. I guess I didn’t, but I didn’t notice it. I’ll have to take a look when I get home. Thanks.

Thanks. This seems to be contradictory to GregX’s post, but it makes more sense intuitively. In any case, I’ll remove and take a look.

From my experience, I’d say that GregX has it backwards. The 10sp cassette is wider but the 10sp chain is narrower. The hub on my 404 is suitable for 9sp or 10sp Shimano. The 9sp does not lock down without a spacer.

So I’ve got to remove that spacer that’s closest to the hub (which I didn’t notice, but whatever - first time taking a cassette on / off)?

from my experience, i’d say that you may want to review your shimano service literature.

gregx has it like shimano tells you do it (on the shimano flyer incuded with every DA 10 speed cassette).

here you go:

So what is the spacer-like thing sitting on the hub of my 404s between the 9sp cassette and the spokes? Seriously. I’m not trying to be sarcastic here. I had the exact opposite problem when I went to install my 9sp cassette on my new 404s. They were brand new at the time and I was told that the hub is a 9sp/10sp hub. When I put the 9sp cassette on, it could not be locked down. I took it to the shop where I bought them and they installed something that look a lot like a spacer. I needed the same spacer when I went to put the cassette back on my Ksyriums so I assumed that we dropped the spacer taking the cassette off the Ksyriums. Did I miss something here?

Wow, thanks. I appreciate it.

go to shimano usa and read the tech documents for the DA and ultegra cassettes and rear hubs. you will see when the spacer is needed: for most combinations of DA 10 or ultegra 10 cassettes on ANYthing other than a shimano DA 10-speed hub or dedicated shimano 10-speed wheels. but some ultegra cassettes require a spacer near the lockring.

and to my knowledge, for shimano there is no such thing as ‘9spd/10spd’ hub per se.

there are hubs that accept 8-speed, 9-speed, and 10-speed cassettes (zipps and a bunch of others fall into this category).

and there are hubs that only accept 10-speed cassettes: shimano DA 10 (but not the current ultegra, they accept both 9 and 10 speed cassettes).

GregX

I’ve had this same question. Thanks for the info, and thanks alot for the weblink. I did not know it existed.

GregX,

I went back and, sure enough, I didn’t include the spacer. So I slapped it on, installed the cassette, but now I can’t get the lockring to engage with the threads of the hub. It seems that spacer is just enough to make it not fit the hub of the Zipp 404.

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. You clearly were correct in your shimano literature, so I don’t know what to do.

Anyways, I’m going over to a bike shop today, so we’ll see what they have to say. Thanks for your help.

Rick

sorry it didn’t work out. tons of folks have shimano 10 cassettes on their zipps, so it should work somehow. maybe check to see you don’t have an extra spacer under the lockring, and also go through all the parts to be sure all the cogs and spacer rings are in the right order. without seeing it, i think your next step is a good mechanic at the LBS …

Yeah, I know. I can not imagine it’s a compatibility issue as plenty of people run the 10speed’s on Zipps. It’s a 2005 wheel, so it’s not like it’s an archaic 404, either.

All the cogs and spacers are definitely in the right order. But beyond that, anything’s possible.

I’m sure it’s pilot error. Seeing as it’s the first time I’m trying to swap my own cassette, a mistake on my part is a good possibility.

I’m also no expert, but I had what sounds like a similar problem with my 10 speed cassette and it did turn out to be user error.

Even though the last cog (11t) seemed like it was aligned with the other cogs, I didn’t quite have it rotated into the correct position and the very small gap this caused made it impossible to engage the lockring.

You might try fiddling around with this last cog to see if this is your problem.

Hm. This could very well be the issue. I’m sure the LBS will be very delicate if they realize this is the problem. No turning back now, though.
Thanks.
