Woz at NY Marathon

I’m totally rooting for her. 3:46.

Steve Wozniak is a guy - but boy am I surprised he’s doing the New York marathon
.

Yes, he disinvited Rory and is calling the race the “Not Us Festival”
.

3:25. Longest training run was 13 miles.

Impressive effort.

I’m now a Wozniachi fan - 3:26 is impressive for an active tennis star!

And how about 2010 U.S. Olympic Nordic combined champion Bill Demong - he finished the New York Marathon in an unofficial 2:33:05! There is zero doubt in my mine that these nordic skiers are the worlds best endurance athletes!

Did he use his segway?

And to do that in those conditions really shows some toughness. The final 8mi were absolutely brutal. Major props. Rory is a dope.

Apparently there’s more than one famous Woz.

I’m sure being a professional tennis player has an effect on her amazing performance despite minimal run training.
Awesome

Yes but he had to stop and sign autographs, the Wellesley girls, being Northeast liberal arts types, are all apple fans.

For a world class tennis player that time does not seem especially remarkable. A great tennis player should have strong legs, good cardio and lots of mental toughness. It’s certainly not a bad time. But, saying that her time is “impressive” does not give much credit to the fitness demands of playing tennis at that level.

woz doesnt seem the athlete.

Demong’s is a fine performance, for a sub-elite XC skier (and elite Nordic Combined athlete), but to put in perspective, is an equivalent performance to 15:56/33:06 5k/10k on the Daniels VDOT table. Not exactly elite. Now, when some of the elite Norwegian skiers in the 90’s were running 8:20 for 3km, not that’s some evidence of how great their all-around fitness was.

But if you truly wanted to pick the best endurance athlete, It has to be a triathlete like Alistair Brownlee, who’s sub-elite in both running and cycling (on top of being one of most successful triathletes in world).

Wozniachi’s performance was impressive, particularly considering the conditions, lack of specific background in running, her first marathon (i think?) and the number of things that can go wrong (pacing, nutrition, hydration, etc). She certainly is puts in a high volume of training, has shown a willingness to suffer and got a baseline of running, but hard to imagine she was running more that 40mpw for an extended period of time.

Wozniacki is known as one of the fittest women in tennis. Anyone who watched her matches at the US Open could see the difference between her level of fitness and that of her opponents.

Anyone know of another top-level professional who ran a marathon mid-career?

Her longest run was 13mi. Given the revival of her tennis this summer, I wouldn’t be surprised if she barely cracked 25mi in any week. Crazy.

I’d say his 2:33 was realistically a 2:29 maybe 2:28 effort with the winds. Given this, Demong could probably run low 2:20’s on a Berlin/London course. ~ 70 VDOT (give or take), that’s pretty darn impressive for a non-runner athlete.

  1. I don’t know why there is a superlative for 2:33, seems like what would be expected. This is a “very good” amateur time. I would expect that a gold medalist endurance athlete, who actually spent time to train would not show up and do worse than good amateurs.
  2. How does a 2:33 marathon transfer to being the “worlds best endurance athletes”? There is way more money in running, if these guys were “the best” they would go where the money is. If Demong could even make a US Olympic team in distance running (which until very recently didn’t even necessarily make you truly world class), the shoe money alone is probably worth more than all his Nordic sponsorship.

Nice performance by Demong, but I don;t think it really demonstrates anything other than if you are a strong endurance athlete you can probably do well at a number of endurance sports if you spend some time doing sport specific training. If he ran a 2:20 (which is not even good enough to meet the very weak US Olympic trials standard), I might be more impressed.

To be fair, in repayment for assistance at the end of a bike race, he carried Chris Horner piggyback for the last 6 miles…
