Here in Michigan Karen McKeachie of cooltri.com administers the Michigan Gran Prix Points Series. The scoring system is interesting and makes for great racing.
Athletes are scored in a season long series of participating races and compete for points over the entire season at distances ranging from sprint to 1/2 IM. The competition is broken out into age categories every 5 years.
I’m pretty stoked that I wound up third in 40-44 category for a few reasons:
I did almost no training for the run and the swim, none for the swim actually.
Getting third in the series was a gift becasue two guys who are faster than me, Sean Tyrrell and Todd Briggs, didn’t race much at all. They both had other thins going on this season.
It is the first year I was really back racing actively in the sport on a local basis. Huge fun.
Most other states or regions have some kind of points series also. It’s a great way to race. Big fun!
A man after my own heart…still hate you though;-) As for poor eyesight…make a week long side trip to Canada and get some LASIK eye surgery done…worth every penny I spent.
Had to do a double take for a second there…had that been Stoney Creek instead of Stony Creek I’d have been a might bit confused. Stoney Creek (with an E in Stoney) is nowhere near Michigan and only a few minute drive from me here in Hamilton. And I know there aren’t any races there this weekend.
Congrats! Do you find that your getting faster as you get older, same, or slower? I am 34 and figure with cummulative effects of training that I might be fast by the time im 40. I dont want to rush it or become overly obsessive.
Good question. I am slower, but I train less because work is so much busier.
I think I could be as fast again, but I’m not sure. I am hoping that next year perhaps I can find out with a more concentrated off-season of specific preparation. but you never know, plans change as I have seen so many times in the past. I was supposed to do IM Austria this year, but couldn’t make it. Bummer, but things happen.
The key thing is being able to continue to travel and do the big races I read about as a kid but couldn’t go to. Now I might be slower, but I can do Laguna Phuket, Ironman New Zealand, St. Croix, Nice, Moorea, French Polynesia and go to Curacao to train.
I like going as fast as possible but it really is all about the fun.
