Yesterday, I started my ride at Encanto Park in Duarte, CA. I rode a couple of miles up to the base of the Mountains and then 37.5 miles down to Seal Beach. The temperature at the start was ~ 75 and was about the same 2 hours later when I got to the beach at Seal Beach. From there the temperature rose an average of almost a degree per mile back to the base of the mountains. By about 1pm (95 miles) when I ended it was 107 in the shade (I wasn’t) and by the time I ended my run it was 109. Sumbich! It was HOT. The last couple of miles back were uphill, with the breeze (no cooling). My HR was 166+ at a zone 2 effort.
Glad I’m not the only one boiling in hot weather coupled with a tailwind that seems to always match my speed exactly. Yesterday I was supposed to maintain HR 1-2 on both my bike and run (155 and 159, respectively), but just walking in the shade put me at something like 140-150. I gave in and just jogged lightly for a zone 4 - 5a workout, despite the fact that I was well hydrated. Unreal.
Today was supposed to be a swim, bike, and run, but there’s no way I’m biking and running in this 101-degree weather. The swim was wonderfully cool.
That’ll teach me to sleep in on a weekend and then go for a workout at noon…

Tell me about it. I rode up the SA river trail from the beach around 30 miles. I think it was close to 100 at my turn around(Green River Golf Course). I think it was in the 90’s at my house mid day. Same deal today, did my run early but it was still hot. Good training for Soma.
You know what else sucks? The ocean water temp just plummeted (at least here in San Diego). I went for a long swim and came out shivering only to get out and be dripping wet with sweat an hour later at home laying down resting (no air conditioning…)
I am a So Cal who lives at the beach (West LA) and this is the best time of the year for us, because it is finally WARM. Heck it is even hot today!
Beautiful swim in Manhattan Beach this AM. Glassy conditions outside of the surfline and warm water But there was some sets that had some decent breakers)…
Water warmed up to 68 here in San Clemente today (Monday). We’ve had the three best days of waves all summer this weekend here in SC. Since I took a full week off after IMC, I’ve been able to surf for a few hours each day! Stoked!
Dick, what are you training for with all those huge miles?
Dick
The heat wave is going to break tomorrow. That won’t help me much today on my brick. 40 mile ride inland and four mile run. I hope your Kona training is going well.
I did a ten mile ride at 5:20 am 75 degrees San Diego inland , a few of those Nat bug clouds near the lake otherwise nice. It will be 100 before noon . Today’s dress code boxers and an ice tea or beer in the backyard , 2pm its off to the neighbor lady’s pool .
I watch the weather and see flooding in the south & east , we may have water rationing here WTF

The surf was good up here yesterday.
Have a good day guys!
I forgot that Dick had qualified for Kona at IMAZ! That’s right!
Bob, waves were all-time here this weekend, all three days! I squeezed out 2-hour sessions each day and this morning, I got in an hour before doing an 8-mile run in the heat in the hills. Lost 3 lbs in a 1-hour run today! Crazy!
