Would you run an olympic two weeks out from an IM?

Just did Rev3 Olympic as a tune up for IM Austria. Went all out and that freakin course killed my legs. We are scheduled for Pat Griskus Olympic in 2 weeks which makes us at the time 2 weeks out from IM Austria.

The race is the same area as Rev3 so I am anticipating the same type of killer course. IMHO, there is no way that I wont still have micro trauma in my legs two weeks from now based on what I did to them yesterday…so I am questioning going back in two weeks to do it again. Thoughts?

Definitely do it.

You will have a built in excuse if you do poorly at the IM and if for some reason there is no impact on your IM, you will even look better.

In '08, I did a local OLY race and then two weeks later did IMCDA. This was my first IM and I was nervous that the OLY would negatively impact my taper. I did it anyway after reviewing the nature of my taper. It worked out. I won the local race and then qualified for Kona two weeks later. Those two races remain my two best.

good to hear that response. I am fit and did have one of the best races of my life at Rev3 but man…I am sore.

If it takes you 2 weeks to recover from an oly, then something is wrong with your training leading into the oly.

Especially if it is as part of a buildup to an IM. An Oly should feel like a rest day compared to what you should have been doing all along.

what does that guy who you give money to every month and offers advice about triathlon training have to say about it???

glad you had fun at Rev 3.

Man…I have to get a new anonymous screen name :). My “guy” says my fitness is at a level where the stressor of the race will not be an issue. It will be a great way to stay dialed in and race ready.

I did my first ultra 50K trail race 3 weeks before IM Australia this year. I say “go for it”, unless you’re going for a Kona slot. If that’s the case, then skip it or take it easier in the Oly.

I can’t imagine someone properly trained for an IM still having ‘micro trauma’ 2 weeks later. Proper nutrition, sleep, rest, and low intensity recovery workouts and you should be fine 4 days later.

So in your opinion would you be better spending your time doing any olympic upper zone 4 2 hour workout or say a 3.5 to 4.5 hour brick workout at mid low zone 3? I’m facing this thought right now actually because there is a pan flat super PR fast course Oly I’d like to do 2 weeks out from LP.
