Would Gingrich stand a chance in the general?

Consider this:

13% Black
15% Hispanic
30% claim they would not vote for a twice divorced candidate

Is he hoping to get ALL of the white swing voters who don’t have a problem with his personal life?

Honest question. I think the Republicans are throwing the election is they don’t nominate Romney.

Gingrich is “Entertaining”, intelligent and I think ALL OVER THE BOARD. I’m not wondering if this wouldn’t work FOR him in the general election, especially against Obama. Seems he’s just as good at saying something today and something the opposite tomorrow and have nobody say anything. If they do say something he has a knack for “Talking around it”.

I figure an Obama/Gingrich campaign would have the entire country thinking that if either of them got elected the US will be the land of Unicorns and Butterflies. I’m not sure how far Gingrich is willing to go to get the Socialist vote and I’m not sure how far Obama is willing to go to get the Libertarian vote. In either case it should be amazingly entertaining.

Gingrich would unite the dems and independents for Obama. It’s Goldwater all over again.

not
.

It must be pure arrogance on his part to even think that he would be a viable candidate.

I don’t think I could hold my nose and vote for him.
I don’t so much have problem with two divorces as the hypocrisy involved.

Of course what I think matters little, based on my location.

I wish someone would tell me why they actually support Romney as a candidate, why they are excited about voting him, why they think he should be elected to the highest office in the land- other than the fact they think he can win. I just don’t see it.

Oh, and “Not Newt” doesn’t count, either.

yeah, i’ve been trying to play out in my head how mitt OR newt would play out in the general election, and i’m kind of stumped.

p.s- though it’s fascinating to me that there’s a 2/3 chance that america’s next president will be called either ‘mitt’ or ‘newt.’

I think many underestimated the dislike for Romney. Last summer Gingrich’s team quit en masse because he was more interested in selling books than campaigning. But as it became clear that a near majority of Republicans would vote for anyone not named Mitt a rotation of candidates surged and fell back.

Newt has a distinct advantage over the other candidates. He is much like a college football team that lost early. By the end of the season he is polling well again. Everybody knew Newt was a slimy little lizard coming in. But they thought people like Cain, Bachmann, and Perry were not. As their faults became known they fell back. But there is no new scandal for Newt. He’s already done everything bad he could do.

I do not see how a man that was run out of the House, had to pay a large amount for ethics violations, had a long term affair on his second wife and married his mistress for a second time, and has said all the off the wall things he has said (fight poverty by getting rid of child labor laws for instance) all within the last 15 years, wins a general election. I don’t think the anti-Obama hatred runs through a broad enough swath of people (no matter how deeply it runs for some) to let him win.

I’ve wondered the same thing. Someone on this forum made a video supporting Romney and I got about half way through it before I couldn’t take it anymore. His ONLY argument to vote for him that I heard is that he can beat Obama. So far, that is the only reasoning I’ve heard for voting or not for any of the candidates.

Newt’s great at firing up the ultra conservatives with his one liners at debates. At the same time he’s got the same type of ability to scare the shit out of moderates as much as Ron Paul, which would cost him the general election. I like some of his ideas as well as some of the things that come from Paul, but the total package of either of them makes me nervous.

I’m not making these points, but here’s the arguments I see:

1 - can pull swing votes since h ecomes off as less crazy than the alternatives in the GOP
2 - 2 term Governor
3 - Good business background and its a bad economy

Exciting? No.

Yea, but he’s a scumbag. Oh, wait. That doesn’t make him unelectable in this country does it?

How far back do we have to go to find a candidate from any party that was recognized as a viable candidate? Are there no decent politicians anywhere???

Same could be said about McCain. He started off weak and came through in the end…as a result of a lack of interest in anyone else.

It’s funny, as much as I disliked Bush as a President, he sure was a much better campaigner than the last two rounds of GOP nominees.

He’s Not Obama.

Same here.

Obama could kill his wife and kids and follow it up with a prime-time televised coke-fulled orgy and he’d still get MD’s electoral votes.

I don’t like Newt’s arrogance and the fact that he can be all over the map on some things. I also do not like some of his ultra conservative social views. BUT, I think Obama is the worst POTUS in the last 50 yrs and must go. Newt has the intellect, is fisically conservative, has an intelligent position on illegals and as POTUS can not implement any of his social positions. Of the three (he, Obama, Mitt), IMO he would do the best job.

One of the factors that got Obama elected was the anti-Bush vote of independents. Don’t underestimate the anti-Obama vote from independents.
