Hi there,
Was wondering whether made any sense to change the Mavic Open Pro 32 hole rim I have now for a ZIPP 505, 32 hole rim for my PowerTap SL hub…waste of money or more aero advantage? thinking of using the wheel for races too…
For racing, you can go with the Zipp, but you will be adding weight to your set
Take a look at Velocity, meaning the Arrowhead or Deep V or Fusion, durable al rims
I am building the Powertap SL with Velocity Arrowhead 28h rims, OC rear, anodized red!
I would consider the Zipps (though I don’t know what 505s are, I’m guessing similar to 404s?), but the Velocitys? Nah, they aren’t very aero at all and not really light, so why bother? I say either go all the way or skip it.
Thanks Gary and Aztec…I think it’s not worth switching to a 30mm rim…the benefit won’t be that great would it…it’s either ZIPP or forget it…though just seen the prices of the ZIPP rims…forget it!!!
The Zipps retail for about $400 US each, for clinchers.
You already have the hub, which is the most expensive piece.
I suggest having a wheelset built around it, using Velocity Aerohead rims (405g and 5 colors) and 32h DB spokes rear, and a 24h Chris King hub front with a 24h Aerohead rim, and DB spokes.
This would cost about $400 US for the build, front hub, rims/spokes/nipples.
A much better option to building race worthy wheels. The Aerohead is 25mm, like Dura Ace rims. Nice for road or windy/hilly tri’s.
That is what I am building up (with a 28h SL hub) for the road race bike, using
