World Triathlon Championships - Ottawa Canada on Aug 21, 2010

This should be a great event - Ottawa, Canada. August 21, 2010.

The course sounds fantastic - riding in the Gatineau Park will be a beautiful course, but hilly and tough. And running alongside the Rideau Canal will be equally as beautiful.

Let’s hope this event comes together.

How precisely is that a world championship??

Im going to make up a random distance and call it a world championship… I mean what the hell why not.

Actually clearwater was made a World Championship after having multiple successful 70.3 races around the U.S. and world. They didn’t randomly go oh we are going to make up a distance then call it a world championship.

Nice round number. Like 70.3.

140.6 is too??

You speak the truth.

Guess my point is that arbitrary numbers are only arbitrary until we assign importance to them.

I thought we had enough World Championships with the ITU and WTC depending on which (established) distance one raced.

I guess the problem I (and seemingly others) have is that a company without an established record of any length is looking to set up a Worlds Championship. I guess it will be interesting to see how many people turn up and what names get onboard.

that’s definitely going to mess up my preparation for the canadian on the following weekend :frowning:

intersting concept. It looks like they will only accept folks who are participating in

"Qualifications and entries for the World Triathlon Championship will be taken from July 1st, 2009 through June 30th of 2010 across selected independent races worldwide, providing everyone an opportunity to set higher goals for themselves, and in turn increase local race turnouts.

Triathletes taking part in pre-approved triathlons over this period will be invited to participate at the World Triathlon Championship (qualifications to be awarded equally by gender and age categories with alternates for each)."

So I guess that rules out any Ironman races.
I think I will have a go at this race. Sounds really interesting.

Is this for real? I live in Ottawa, and I agree this would be an amazing venue, but “World Championship”? Come on. I think you can only earn that distinction over time, no?

hard to believe so far remembering all that fights about “World Championship” title for Kona between ITU and WTC, but would be great to find it true! going to contact them about our half IM in Ukraine…

I have to admit, I’ve never heard of the ITA. Maybe we should start the STA here and have a world championship!

Good God, keep this going and we’ll end up like boxing. How many championship belts are there nowadays?

On the plus side, maybe we can then have some uber-race to decide the Undisputed Champion of Triathlon. Everybody bring their title – IMH Ironman Champion, USAT Longcourse, 70.3 Clearwater – and lay it on the line, winner takes all the belts home.

LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE.

mm

Maybe we can have the distances be 1.86 mile swim and 80.6 mile bike and an 18.6 mile run, and call it the 101 distance and pay a lot of money out have a championship for it and see how long it lasts… oh wait nevermind.

clearwater and WTC self proclamed themself a world championship. It s simply ridicoulous to have a championship in the usa year after year. The caliber isnt in line with a world championship, it s mainly a usa race and the 70.3 series that is so succesfull is mainly a collection of private race that where there before. I simply find clearwater a joke and insulte to the sport in calling it a world championship.

as for this race in ottawa… it s my native region but once again, disrecpectfull to call this world championship. Everyone will be a world champion in a few years…

Well there is a bit of a gap. There isn’t going to be a world champion in the standard distance ITU this year; there will be a world series champion though.

More big triathlon events just sounds better for the sport. I wonder how many they intend to have on the start line? I wonder if they have already lined up all the affiliated races to quailfy. What distance are they planning?

In NZ there is a multisport race and they call it the ‘world championship’ of multisport. The same guy who runs it started events in NZ back in 1983 or so and they were called ‘ironman events’ which involved ski-ing down a mountain, grade 4 kayaking in the upper shotover river etc, and was told he still has rights to that name.

Stranger things have happened so no surprises.

Well actually it is 62.1!!

You’re right damn that hawaii ironman world championship being in the US year after year. No pros showed up for the 70.3 from outside the U.S. either Minus the fact that 54 out of the 74 pros weren’t from the U.S.

I’d count how many non-americans were in the AG ranks but im not that bored you can do it yourself. Also almost half of the 70.3 races are outside of the u.s. But i can see how it is American only. Now of course there are going to be more people from the N.A. at a race in N.A. the same way i would expect more people from Europe to be at a race that is in Europe. That isn’t rocket science. Not all people care about Ironman ;).

Who would you expect to declare it the World Championship race? Its not like ITU is going go you know WTC were going to declare Clearwater be the world championship for a distance we don’t have any involvement in.

I think this is a good idea and why can’t they call it a “world championship”? I often wonder about the winner of the MLB World Series being calling the “World Champion”, however they are merely the champion within the MLB. They did not play any other teams outside the US/Canada (or MLB) (granted there are a lot of non-US/Canadian players). Who knows if a team from Japan, Guam, Australia, etc could have crushed the world series champ. MLB is just an example, you could apply the same logic to the NHL, NFL, NBA, etc, etc. I think theses leagues have the money to promote their popularity and acquire top players.

It seems they are looking at all the other races (read: non-IM branded, non-ITU) knowing there are a lot ot talented AG athletes that would like to compete on this level. The distance seems great too, in that it will be new for all participants; a bit longer for those used to Olys and a bit shorter for half-iron distance folks.
