Thanks to everyone for your feedback so far. I agree I should have asked the finishing times for each person as well as your splits in the three sports.
It’s hard to guess at an expected IM finishing time, since IMWI 2006 will be my first IM. Based on my swimming in open water, I’d probably come close to 1:05-1:10. Biking seems to be my strength and for 50-60 mile training rides (not pushing the pace hard), I was averaging about 18.5 -19.0 mph. 62 miles is the longest ride I have had so I really can’t gauge my time for 112 miles yet. For triathlons this summer that included bike rides of 21+ miles, I got over 21 mph. Running is my weakness since I am a big clydesdale. In my marathons (not IM, but just a marathon), my times are from 4:39-4:48. I was only a couple of weeks from my first half ironman when I fractured the foot and was shooting for about a 5:35-5:45 finish time. After watching my first IM, I was humbled enough to realize my goal will be to finish it. It was tough watching so many athletes dnf on the bike ride.
First, my goal is to finish, if I am sub 15:00, I would be happy with that. I wrecked my first marathon by having an unrealistic time goal, I don’t plan to repeat that mistake.
My plans over the next six months are to focus on nutrition and drop 20-25 lbs. I am planning a marathon in Jan and March so my running percentage will be higher over this time period. My marathon training will still include a lot of swimming and cycling. Next spring/summer, I’ll do as at least a half dozen 100+ bike rides, including one that will be on the race course a few weeks prior to the race.
My training schedules are 3/3/3. Three of each sport every week with one day off for rest. The best part of the 3/3/3 is that it keeps a person from burning out on a particular activity.
I appreciate the willingness of so many slowtwichers to give their opinions and advice, and ultimately it comes down to each person doing what works best for themselves.
