Workout Ideas for Severe Rainstorms

Help! It’s pouring. It’s the rainy season down here. Right now, I can’t see ANYTHING out of my office window except the roof of the building next door. I’m supposed to have a 4000 yd swim practice tonite, which has about a 90% chance of being canceled. Mostly likely the pools will be closed.

Does anyone have any good ideas for workouts in monsoon-type conditions? Last week was a recovery week, and I need to do something b/c I’m having a stressful day here at work. I already lifted today…

If it pours out, I usually just throw my bike up on the trainer, pop a movie in, and spin for as long as I can mentally take it. It’s quite boring, but it’s a workout.

Anyplace where you could do a spin class or anything like that? I imagine that there aren’t very many indoor pools in Florida.

I get my workouts done early in the morning, because its usually raining like it is now in the afternoon all summer long.

How did you like the mosquito fest this weekend on the key???

Running in a white T-Shirt

Sorry, Miami… I saw your pic in another thread and you’re a cutie so that was too easy.

Now as far as training ideas… Personally, I LOVE to run in the rain. However, I have experienced Florida rainstorms and that is probably out of the question.

How about a nice long stretching/Yoga session? It would probably be very thereputic given your stressful day and the benefits of stretching are sometimes forgotten.

no access to an indoor pool?

Florida has been the worst place for swimming that I have lived. In a city of 1M+ people we have, like 4 indoor pools, all at least 45 minutes from home. We have a neighborhood pool, but its more than likely raining when I try to swim. Mornings are out too because the outdoor pool doesn’t open until 6:30 (no lights). That’s way too late for me to swim AND make it to work on time. I never knew how good I had it before.

I don’t own a trainer, unfortunately. I usually don’t need one down here. =)

And pools - even the indoor ones close in severe weather. I swim at the U. of Miami pools, and they recently installed an electricity monitor that gauges the amount of electricity in the air. Even if it’s sunny out, if the amount of charge in the air is sufficient, they close all the pools and the IM fields. It’s some kind of early detection thing…

i know. i usually workout in the AMs. But, our club has a scheduled/coached swim practice in the evenings, so I plan around that on Mondays and Thursdays.

I did yoga yesterday and had a deep tissue massage on Friday. I was really feeling pumped about having a good swim tonight…

Oh, and I’m covered with mosquito bites. I did a swim/bike workout on Saturday, and when I got out of the water, I had to run to my car, change clothes, and put the front tire on my bike. I probably have 60-80 bites. This rain is only going to breed more of those suckers…

yes, I do. go to grocery store. pick up case of beer. curl it 10 times…go anerobic put in cart. sprint to check out line. drive home, or walk if you’ve got a hard training day planned. sprint to fridge for every beer you need. jump over dog or cat en route.

post workout is a warm down with a bailey’s and coffee. call significant other for a rub down.

There are other things you can do indoors to get your heart-rate up. Call Fulla, I think he’d be willing to help

I got to the key late and missed the swim and watched my buddies run from the water to the car, pretty funny to watch. We got on our bikes and rode to the CVS store at the end of the Key and bought some mosquito reppelant. Im covered with mosquito bites, I even had a few of them flying around in my car this morning, that was horrible, the worst ive seen in quite a while, hopefully it wont be that bad for the sprint race this weekend

Chill out and find a Yoga class.

running in the rain is fun - if it’s a light rain. however, it’s raining too hard right now to even drive anywhere - let alone run. It’s coming down in sheets, and it’s so dark out that it looks like it’s 10 pm.

well, if it’s raining like this, we probably won’t even have a sprint race this weekend.

On Saturday, I stopped at the bathrooms at that little beach on Virginia Key, and there weren’t any mosquitos there. It seems like Hobie was the worst… Hopefully Crandon is OK. If not, I’ll have my fastest transition times ever!

I don’t ever remember a light rain in the 15 years I lived in miami. It always seemed torrential in the summer. The heavy rains should stop around December. A trainer is a good investment.

Use the ocean! It’s flat right now, no lightning for a while (that I can see from my office anyway) and you’re getting wet anyway… I just watched some clown in a Buick get his car winched off the guardrail on the Lehman Causeway - must have spun off in the downpour - classic! Not much you can do if you’re stuck with a pool workout, they close the pools as soon as there’s reports of lightning in Georgia, seems to me - probably wise but aggravating nonetheless. Patience…

Cheers

Go to the gym and torture the treadmill while making all those pikers around you feel inferior and envious.

I like to torture myself on the treadmill…warmup for 10 minutes at a relatively easy pace, and then jack up the incline to 6%, running the same pace. I try to hold that as long as I can, recover, and then do a series of intervals with hills at 9% for a minute and a 2 minuteish recovery. Following that I throw some speed work in (well, speed work for me, easy pace for most other triathletes). Warm down, then do some ab work, then call it a day. I like this workout because it throws some vertical work in…something that is lacking in my outdoor runs (currently on an extended trip to Panama City).

Sounds like to need to pull up the Lance/Nike commercial from last year…ya know that one with him riding in the rain…that will get you motivated! With lightening not a good idea though!

make sure after your get good and soaked with sweat that you shake your hair really hard.
