Kate Ziegler swam a 9:24.80 in the 1000Y Freesyle Sunday evening December 11th at the Tom Dolan Invitational 2005 Meet at George Mason University – Fairfax, Virginia.
Her time breaks the previous American Record of 9:25.49 set by Janet Evans in March 1989 in Chapel Hill, NC. This record has stood for 16+ years.
The time also set a US Open record and the 17-18 age group record.
Kate’s splits were:
53.66
1:49.93
2:46.64
3:43.71
4:40.76
5:37.88
6:34.98
7:32.06
8:29.86
9:24.80
awesome swim, but why do they still contest races in imperial measurements? its like printing a recipe the lists one of the ingredients as Dodo or tasmanian tiger
There is a Masters Group that swimms in that pool. Nice coach and usually a large group. Several former NCAA top-level guys and gals there last time I whent.

Ziegler’s probably a bit too tall to be an elite triathlete. I think she’s in the 5’11"- 6’0" range. She also went a 4:36 500 yard free, and was on AR pace in the 1650 for most of the race at that same meet.
Same weekend different meet, North Baltimore’s Katie Hoff decided to swim a bit more freestyle than usual for the weekend and went a 48.82 100 yard free, 1:44.50 200 yard free, and 4:38 500 yard free.
If you would have put Hoff and Ziegler in lanes next to each other instead of 60 miles apart, I think someone would have taken down Janet Evans’ 500 yard free record as well.
She also has way too much fast swimming ahead of her. If she is 18 years old, she will be 20, 24 and maybe 28 at her next three Olympics. I would bet being a distance swimmer for that much longer she won’t want to go have some fun on the bike and run after her retirement. Maybe if she comes out after 2012 she might have some desire left. Sort of like Lance, after that much hard work, why would you want to punish yourself some more?
