Thinking of upgrading to wireless, but have two wired wheels. 24h race wheels (440 tubular) and 32h training wheels (clincher.) Anyone upgrade their daily training wheel to wireless, but leave their race-day setup wired? What have others done?
I moved from wired to wireless about a year ago. I really like the wireless from the ability to stuff the computer in a pocket if I don’t want to look at it but still want to get numbers. I think it also aesthetically looks better. If you have the wired setup and the hubs are holding up I might hold out though. With newer power meters coming onto the market it might be better just to go to a crank based system or pedal based (hopefully by year end), then you can switch wheels without any adjustments and save weight.
I upgraded three wheels to wireless, one when it needed servicing and the other two afterwards because I liked not having to deal with any sort of wiring harness issue ever again and cleaning the bikes is more convenient. Once I got them, I wish I could have had them make the wheels all have the same ID to making swapping a little easier - getting the CPU into the mode to learn a new hub ID is a bit involved so it’s more convenient to keep head units with their respective wheels. I could be doing it wrong…
I have one wired, and one wireless. As others noted, the wireless is better. Much more reliable, as well as neater without the wiring harness.
Another wired to wireless upgrader here. Biggest advantage for me was that with wireless, sweat, rain, etc getting between the mount and CPU no longer interrupts data display/recording. Cleaner bike look is a secondary benefit.

Does it bug you to have two different systems? Which wheel did you keep wired?
I’m thinking it may be better to go wireless on the everyday wheel instead of the race wheel- I’d hate to spend the money to upgrade and have it not be my primary wheel. It’d also make switching to different bikes easier, and I wouldn’t be using the race wheels on every bike so I could get by with fewer harnesses.
I had wired, which was pretty much fine for about 2 seasons, and then started to have ridiculous drop-out issues on nearly every ride.
Sent it in to Saris, they sent it back, and it was no better. ARRGH.
Upgraded to wireless last year, still had the occasional drop-out issue. Which a minor ghetto mod (drillium**) of the bike mount cured for good.
Now I am a VERY happy camper, as my PT never drops out anymore, it’s cake to swap it from bike to bike w/o any harnesses needed, which means the bikes themselves also look a lot better w/o all the wires and shite on 'em.
** I sweat like Mike Tyson at a spelling bee, so even the wireless had issues w/ that.
By drilling out holes straight thru under where the computer head contacts are, no fluid can pool up in that area and cause a short, which I’m about 99.999% sure was what caused my issues.
So any stories on how people handled the upgrade when they had more than one wheel?
I just went through this and I’ll be fully wireless by the end of the week. I’ve had a wired PT for 3 years and it has been reliable and
useful, but I decided I wanted an 808 PT race wheel and with all the ANT goodies I figured wireless was the only way to go.
I looked into upgrading my old wired PT COMP model, and there seemed no real way to go via Saris (although I am sure with access to parts
this would work just fine ) so I figured the Wireless 808 would just be clipped on for racing and the wired PT unit would live on the
bike for training. If somebody wanted to put me & my bike on a magazine cover I’d pull the wiring harness off.
This plan lasted for about 3 rides with the wireless unit, when I was hunting for space on my handlebars and looking at just how kludgey to
wiring harness looked. I also like the Edge 500 computer (and GPS data) and wanted to use that for all my rides.
Sooo - I ordered a training wheel from Wheelbuilder for about $1,000 and sold off the wired unit on the Classifieds. I went with the Pro+
hub which was the mid-level hub.
I’ve installed ANT+ Speed & Cadence sensors and Garmin mounts on all my bikes now (MTB, Track, Road, TT) so I can get fairly consistent data from all my bikes
(except Power) just by moving the Edge 500 over. Takes about 5 seconds…
.
You can also get a Garmin 310XT + a elite+ hub for $1115. Then you have a 310xt for runing, and no need for a bike computer.
I have a wired PT. Too messy with all the cables, I’m looking to upgrade to wireless. It has been reliable though
Hmm. So it seems like the consensus is that once you go wireless on one wheel, you just wind up upgrading all your wheels. OK. Since that’s not economically feasible right now maybe I should just stick with what I’ve got.
