A friend of mine ended up in a bad bike v. car accident and now has his jaw wired shut for the next few weeks. For those of you unfortunate to have been in this spot before- what did you eat (drink) to get your calories in? He’s lost 20 lbs and counting. Protein seems to be the hardest thing to get, other than just adding whey to everything.
Any recipes you guys can share? What blends well, and what just doesn’t?
They didn’t have to wire me, but they were very close. And my jaw/teeth were smashed enough that I couldn’t eat anything that couldn’t be chewed VERY easily.
Invest in a LOT of protein powders - and different kinds. I drank a ton of ensure at first, because that is what the hospital had. But once I got more able, my wife brought my magic bullet to the hospital and made me smoothies. But it’s great to have some variety - regular whey protein, but then also pea protein and hemp protein. Especially hemp protein, because it has a lot of fiber, and a lot of pain meds make you constipated (morphine is REALLY awful for this). Whole Foods has an expansive section where you can find a lot of different varieties of protein powder.
The other great source of protein is yogurt. I drank a lot of Keifer, which doesn’t need to be blended since it’s already liquid. So that’s another good source of foods - yougurt and/or yogurt drinks like Kefir.
The other thing, if he doesn’t have one, is to invest in a good blender - vitamix or blendtec. Both of those will blend things you didn’t think you could. A juicer might also be a good investment. Both will have value even after he is unwired.
So anything that is a soup can be pureed and still tastes good. Other than that - yogurt, fruit, and protein powder in as many combinations as you can think of.
One other thing to try blending (probably with milk) would be eggs. Eggs are great because they are soft, so I ate eggs every day, but not sure how they’d blend. Give it a whirl. Some things will work, others won’t, but eggs are another good source of protein. At the very least, you can make some egg drop soup.
