I never noticed a difference in the pin size but there are differences in the links like 6.1mm vs. 6.2mm and 9sp vs. 10sp chain links. It’s a long shot but maybe you got the wrong one.
I have the HG shimano 10 speed, so the lbs told me the compatible one was the 10sp 6.1mm chain link.
