Wipperman Connex 10 speed Shimano chain-WHEN?

I haven’t seen these yet. Are they out? If not, when are they coming out? Is anyone using the Campy chain on a Shimano rig?

Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert. Why do I want a Wipperman chain?

You may not.

I want one because the 9 speed one I had was great. Their quality is very high. I have the Shimano chain now and want to replace it before IM LP.

Are you enjoying Venus today?

I just installed a Wipperman 10 speed chain on my P2. I got it at excel Sports and they come in Nickel, stainless and some incredibly expensive variety. I installed the Nickel one, $35. I have not tried it yet, but its real smooth. The connector is sort of like the sram one, but it looks like its designed to be more secure. I got away from the Campy and Shimano ones because once you break them open, you might as well throw them away. The pins used to re attach the Shimano/ Campy are all different and for some reason the chain is never smooth again, even after riding it awhile. At least the W chain is easy too take apart and put back. Shimano needs to go back to the drawing board on these. Campy chains will work as well as Mavic, but from what I have seen, the Wipperman looks like the best option.

Thanks, I found the nickel one. That’s great.

I wasn;t suggesting you shouldn’t want a wipperman. I just have heard them discussed, and have never focused on chains, so that was my warped way of saying “Teach me about chains”. Do these have a reusable take it off put it back on link, or one of those damn Shimano rivets. It would be nice to get the chain really clean. The Chain Gang chain cleaner is pretty good, but…

Yes, they have an SRM style removable link. The SRM chains are also pretty darn good. For LP though, I thought I might splurge. The Shimano chain is fine, but you need to pop the rivet to adjust the length. It now has a removable link for ease of cleaning though. (10 speed version) I think Dan has a blurb on the Wipperman chain on this site, btw. It got his thumbs up.

Monk, I have the Wippermann connex chain on both my Kestrel and Kuota.

They have a removable link which you can undo by hand to remove the chain for cleaning and for transporting the bike. Take a look at http://www.connexchain.com/ and check the window entitled connectors, you can see a demonstration of how easy it is to remove the chain. In addition to this feature they are exceptionally smooth chains (Wippermann only make chains, nothing else) and very strong also.
