I just got back from a week of training in san deigo which was amazing and now trying to think of a location for next year. I would go 1st week in march and looking for a place that has good weather and hills/mountains I could train in. I also would be going with my fiancee, so I need a place that has activities for us to do after I bike in the early morning. San Diego worked well because of all the beaches, sun, and so many things to do which helped keep her happy. Any suggestions?
How about San Diego?
haha looking for another spot… maybe… love that place
Jupiter, FL or Sarasota, FL are great areas for cycling with the best beaches and entertainment aplenty
.
I’ve heard New Mexico is really nice in the winter, and probably quite a bit more affordable. You don’t have beaches, but if you want mountains and beaches with good weather you seem limited to southern california and hawaii.
No mountains but check out Portofino resort in Pensacola, FL.
Tucson and Phoenix are both nice in the winter. Tucson has Mt Lemmon which is a very nice climb as well as several other good climbs around town.
Maui - mountains - a variety of rides, runs, hikes, open water swims - 4 public pools with free lane swim 10- 4:30 seven days a week … and lots to do outdies of sbr.
I hear that the sun hangs out in the southern hemisphere for the entire time between the end of September until the end of March.
I think the ultimate place is Flagstaff/Sedona AZ. Live in Flagstaff (at altitude) and when you want to warmer run drive 30-minutes south to Sedona where the average winter high temp is around 60F (been in the 70’s this winter).
Northern Georgia, Chattahoochee National Forest.
Lots of good roads and mountains. I was there two weeks ago and it was 50 to 65 degrees.

Santa Barbara, got the hills, and the beach and what winter???

Absolutely. Or the Santa Ynez valley

What sort of activities… and since you liked San Diego so much, what are you looking for that might be different?
Just got back from a week in Fredericksburg, Texas. If you want hills and very quiet roads (ie no cars in 2-3 hours of riding) that is your place. Plus it is cheap to stay there. It’s a small town so not a lot of stuff going on(didn’t really look though). Good German restaurants there so, the wife could get as much sausage she wants when you are out riding. Win-Win!!
Just things that she would enjoy to do at night and anything to keep her busy while I bike. May end up back in san diego it really is pretty perfect out there. Was just looking for other suggestions
I grew up in Del Mar, so think you are on to a decent thing w/ San Diego. I live in LA and I’d recommend you consider it if your spouse likes cultural activities. There are plenty of excellent places to ride and train as well including extensive mountains both east (San Gabriels and Angeles Forest) and by the coast (Santa Monica mountains).
I’d also second the recommendation for Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez which will have a lower key, less crowded vibe.

Since you have to plan ahead, bad weather could really screw things up. You want a dry, warm, not too windy place ideally. Since you are riding in the morning, there is no way any place will be too hot.
CA can get a lot of rain in early Mar. It just depends. It’s worse the farther north you go.
NM can get windy that time of year, and it really isn’t solidly warm yet.
FL has no hills.
TX can be rainy and windy then.
I think either the Tucson or Phoenix area would be your best bet. Tucson would be #1 for me.
How about Vegas?
If you stay somewhere like the Green Valley Ranch (10 minutes south of the strip), you get the best of everything.
Short drive to lake mead or red rock canyon for cycling, adult only lap pool and full gym at the hotel. Paved running trail.
Also has shopping, spa, gorgeous outdoor pools, quiet roads for walking, movie theatre.
I had Vegas on my list originally, but thought Phoenix and Tucson would be better because of higher temperatures and more cyclists.
