any one have thoughts on gloves for brutal midwest temps and wind? I want light weight gloves that can handle the cold temps down to around zero degrees. I thought Sport hill made a pair for zone 3 0-40 degrees, but I can’t seem to find them.
I recommend heading down to your local cross country ski shop. Usually they have a wall full of gloves and mitts. You’ll be able to find something for your conditions that you like.
x2 mittens.
Forget gloves when it is 0F or colder and/or 15 mph winds or higher.
Here in the Arctic northern prairies I wear very thin liner gloves for wicking (powerdry or equivalent) under fleece mittens in a mitten windshell.
Don’t wear anything snug that inhibits circulation.
The liner gloves take care of inevitable sweat that happens when running. The rest is for insulation and protection.
If my hands are still too cold, it is time for a ride on the indoor trainer
I have not tested this cycling, but it works for running / snowshoe running / XC skiing.
My fave combo down into the single digits below zero is any set of lightweight thermal gloves or liners (i.e. full finger mtb gloves need not apply) plus a wind/waterproof mitten or “lobster” style shell. The latter two I don’t see in our lineup anymore, but I know Pearl Izumi has both.
Been running around in that general setup (some Bontrager protos, not PIs) on our coldest SE Wisconsin nights this year with no problems even down into the teens-below wind chills.
Yeah go with either mittens or the Pearl Izumi or Craft lobster gloves. I also find that it helps to take your fingers out of the fingers of the gloves and make a fist, the body heat helps a lot.
I will add my voice to those recommending mittens. I used to find that windproof mittens would do the trick even if they were barely insulated. I had bought a pair for cold-weather XC skiing. The palms were leather and the backs were windproof nylon. If it was really cold, such as zero, then I would use the thin liners I had for them and was fine.
Below that I would use some cheap snowmobile gauntlet mittens. Often so hot I had to pull them off for a few minutes at a time every once in a while. But I used them on a run I did at -50F (-80F with wind chill) and my hands were comfy.
