Winter Cycling - Gloves & Booties

I personally prefer the Craft lobster mitts over the Pearl Izumi lobster mitts. I think they are warmer, more windproof, and wear better. Used them down to about 18F very comfortably.

Did you have to pay much mre for the Craft mitts than the PI ones? I haven’t seen the Craft mitts so can’t comment.

Advice from northern IL, where its cold and miserably windy in winter:

  1. Air is what will insulate you- make sure there’s some wiggle room in your gloves and shoes.

  2. Wool kicks ass.

  3. Make sure to go windproof on the outer layer.

  4. Wiggle your fingers and toes often- it helps maintain circulation. I’m good for 60-90 minutes when its cold as shit on the bike. Try some winter bricks- running keeps you a lot warmer.

  5. Cover any exposed skin w/ some of that fancy warming oil (you can get one hell of a headache from the exposed patch between and just above your eyebrows, even w/ a balaclava- trust me…) or vaseline if you’re cheap like me. Don’t skimp- pile it on- its not like its going to heat up and run, anyhow.
