Wine question for mopdahl and anyone else who can answer

I have a few 89 Bordeaux, Pauillac as well as some nice CA wines like Caymus- Where is a good place on the net to get values, ratings and drinkability (if that is a word)?

You will be branded a rich republican for revealing this.

You will be branded a rich republican for revealing this.

Well only half is true, I wish both were. You can guess which is true

Tim

I will give you $5 a bottle in cash today for the Caymus.

Sold I’ll just add the $1000.00 Shipping and handeling fee/bottle and get it out the dorr today. where should I ship them to?

.

I’d start at winepectator.com and see what you can come up with…

Ratings: either Wine Spectator (www.winespectator.com) or Robert Parker (www.erobertparker.com) have online sites complete with release prices, drinking windows & ratings. RP is taken more seriously by the francophiles, and has a better discussion board, but Wine Spectator sells more wine (meaning I would rather get the same points for my wines from WS than RP, as more people read WS). RP is also suffering from a bit of grade inflation lately–his scores on the 89s are probably pretty true to form, as opposed to his reviews over the last 5 years as everyone is making wine to suit his pallet & there are a plethora of high scores.

Values: three types of values: auction, retail, and trade. Best bet for determining retail values is www.wine-searcher.com awesome tool that will give you the high & low retail values from about 2000 wine retailers world-wide. Best way to determine values via auction is to send your list of wines to either Winebid (www.winebid.com) or Zachy’s (www.zachys.com). Some local retailers may buy from you as well, depending on state laws. Trade value is what you would be willing to trade for with other collectors–doesn’t sound like you are interested in this. You could also checkout www.winecommune.com to find out what the bottles are worth, but unless there are bids on a wine, it is probably just someone looking for pie-in-the-sky $$.

Drinkability: never had an 89 Caymus & don’t know shit about California wines, so can’t help you there. 89s are just beginning to enter their drinking window (depending on how they are stored).

FWIW, 89 Bordeauxs are my favorites–didn’t get huge press, so their values are a bit deflated (relative to the 82/85/90), but are drinking beautifully right now. How were they stored & what do you have? I’m always buying these for my own cellar.

Thanks I tried that, but you need to be a memebr to get the info.

Wow great response thanks for your time.

As far as values go really it is for insurance purposes only- you know if the places burns down or we get robbed

FWI my Caymus are 94’s not 89’s, a bit confusing in my original post.

I used to work at a little restaurant in Muncie IN while in college called Foxfires, it was (no longer in existence) own by Jim Davis who writes Garfield the comic strip. Jim is a huge wine guy, for his 50’s birthday in 1995 I and a few other waiters served him all 45’s including Petrus, Chateau Margeaux, Rothschild (don’t know which one) and lot more along with a 45 Fonseca and don’t forget the Louis 13th Cognac. While I was there I picked a few wines at cost for the wine steward who was also one of my best friends. The list isn’t long.

1989 Lafite de Carruades

Wine Advocate #85 (Feb 1993) Robert Parker 85 points Drink 1993-2005 $35.00

I lament the fact that few “second” wines actually resemble their more esteemed siblings. Why? As severe as the selection can be for the grand vin, little selection is employed for most second wines as diluted cuvees, young vines, and whatever is tossed into these blends. With that warning in mind, the 1989 is a deuxieme wine that displays some of Lafite’s personality. The vanillin, smoky, lead pencil nose is unmistakable. In the mouth, there is real focus, character, and elegance. This tasty Lafite-look-alike will drink handsomely for 6-12 or more years.

I couldn’t find a few of them as spelling was probably off, so here are the ratings from 1989 with Chateau in them:

You are a closet democrat?

Nothing is too good for the working classes! Including vintage Bordeaux.

I’m a Chateau Petrus guy myself…but in the interests of paying my mortgage every month I drink a lot more Lynch-Bages.
