Wind and cycling. Can I ride with 20 mph winds?

or do I have a legitimate excuse not to ride today… I don’t want to get knocked over…

(Seriously, is it too windy to be outside?)

Thats a normal day here…

but I’m little… like, leaf-sized…

then you have less surface area for the wind to hit
.

Unless your sporting new 808’s, you need to get your pixie butt out on the road!

Fine

It’ll feel good when I get out there, right? I swam yesterday AM, skipped running and cycling because I was just too plain tired (took a 2 hr nap instead and slept like a rock), ran 16.25 mi this morning and am a little tired but mostly just feeling lazy

I don’t know what 808s are
.

Zipp 808s - deep section (81 mm) carbon-rimmed wheels. Much more aerodynamic than your run of the mill bike wheel, but they have a lot more surface area for cross winds to push on.

A picture of them is at http://www.zipp.com/wheels/detail.php?ID=21

Oh. No fancy wheels. The only fancy things I have on my bike is streamers. And a horn

Quitcherwhining. If you have a road bike, or even better, a mtb, take that out instead. Ride the shallowest wheels you have. Plan your ride so that you have a headwind in the beginning and a tailwind in the end… you’ll get over it.

Are you kidding! Just did a road race yesterday with 35 squirrely riders in my Cat around me in 20 mph winds

You’ll be fine. So, how big do the waves have to be to stop you from swimming?

When I was in France, there were seriously windy days. The only days when it was too windy to ride, I nearly got pushed over when running!

I found that it’s possible to cycle in nearly any wind as long as you ride directly into and away from it.

Judging by her response to a little wind, I would say 1-2 inches!

ALRIGHT I’m going.

if I ride today it will be on CT - I WAS going to do a 3 hour ride, but I fought the wind last sunday (kept me aero that is for sure). I am not a fan of being blown into the cars…

now I might go swim later…

I did however write the talk I have to give next saturday in Arizona

Normal in NorCal too. And down here at Xantusia, I rode in gusts up to about 40 mph one day. Yesterday Dawn and I rode in a headwind of probably 20 mph.

Hey Aliye, no excuse for not riding. I’m in your neck of woods (Waterville-Winslow area) and just got back from a 2hr ride. The wind was nuts, blowing from NNE at about 20-25mph with frequent gusts on top of that, but that made at least the first half of my ride an absolute blast. This was the 18mi stretch of gentle rollers going S, which took me only a bit over 38 minutes. I was on 4-spoke wheels, and the bike sounded like one of them RAF Spitfires; next time I’m going to mount a machine gun on my aerobars to make the experience complete. As for the second half, heading straight into the wind, I won’t say anything about it; you’re going to find out for yourself. If you’re like me, it’ll build both your character and curse-word vocabulary.

Belated congrats on your thesis defense, by the way. I’m defending mine in 5 weeks. It’s a bit longer than yours (400 pages - it’s for a D.Phil. degree) and deals with a slightly more controversial subject (U.S. foreign policy), but that will make the viva that much more fun. I really look forward to it.

Happy training up in Orono, hopefully you’ll manage to stay on the road.

And around El Paso, with the average tree height at 2.3ft, there is nowhere to hide…when it’s windy, (say, the last 4-5 weeks now…) you’re out of luck! Feels like we’ve had constant 25mph for the past 4 to 5 weeks with every single weekend worse, and nasty gusts hitting 60mph.

Get out there. A Jr. on my team did a race (Fort Davis) last weekend where the winds were ~40 mph. On the TT he motored out at about 12 mph. The way back he was completely spun out (Jr. gears are limited) at 140-150 rpm going 45 mph or so.

I’m actually in Skowhegan at my parents’ house for Easter.
