i just entered the honu half ironman where the rules state that all triathletes must wear a shirt. i hate wearing shirts. i’ve run in marathons where the rules also require a shirt, but tons of marathoners run shirtless without getting DQed.
anyone know if i can get away with going shirtless at honu and if anyone else has done it? i’ll only wear a shirt and maybe even a man-bra (sick joke) to avoid the DQ but would prefer no shirt.
why the fcuk do they require shirts for the bike/run but not the swim?? why do they require shirts at all? especially in a very hot locale??? seems like an archaic, lame regulation to me…
And really, what qualifies as a “shirt”? If “shirt” is not really well defined in the rules, then it seems that you could take the man bra thing to it’s logical conclusion and just make it as tiny as possible.
“You’re not wearing a shirt. You’re disqualified.”
“Yes, actually, I am, see.”
“That’s just a shoelace tied around your shoulders. That’s not a shirt.”
The only races that require shirts in the US that I am aware of are Ironman distance races. In Europe I think that you must wear one always.
BTW I saw a couple of guys at IMF who took their shirts off during the run which should be a penalty. But I seriously doubt that anything was called for it. They did not call many penalties for anything during that race. Lots of drafting, Ipods, etc.
Why risk it? Plus with the wicking fabric these days, I think wearing something light is cooler than no shirt at all, where the sweat just sits on your body. That’s just me. Plus, have you ever made a post w/o mentioning a man bra? I mean, I don’t like them either, but its not something I think about.

“Prove it.”
lol! hilarious. i’d love to be able to pull it off, but there’s a lot on the line here and unless i hear that others have done honu shirtless without a DQ, than i guess i’m stuck with a shirt!
anyone done honu without a shirt or DQ or penalty?
why risk it all? exactly, that’s why i’m trying to get a consensus as to if this “rule” specifically at honu, is “breakable” like most marathons that require a shirt.
sorry about the man-bra jokes. wouldn’t it be justice if i actually broke down and decided to wear one just to accomodate the dumb rule??

Some cultures consider a man without a top to be considered nude. Since IM races have international fields, international spectators, and are taped and broadcast worldwide, they have a rule that says you must wear a shirt, man-bra, or other covering so that some people won’t be offended. ITU has the same rule. USAT doesn’t, since topless males in America is considered OK.
A pure guess is that it’s OK to not wear one on the swim because you’re in the water almost all the time, and there aren’t a lot of camera shots or spectators hanging out on the swim course. The bike and run are a different story.
Honu is a GTG race? If so, I think that if you’re stopped on course the first time, they’ll tell you that you need to have a shirt on, and let you go. Same thing for a second stop, and a third stop will earn you a DQ. Don’t know if they would go to that extreme, but it’s possible. Maybe somebody from GTG can fill in the whys and hows.

I just checked the GTC race rules, and there is nothing in there that says you have to wear a shirt. The only clothing reference (other than no fairings) is that of public nudity in transition. I assume that the “shirt required” rule is a race-specific one (usually or always applied to IM races?). I don’t know anything about a shirt being required at a 70.3 race like Eagleman.
Some do, some don’t. I always wear one now after once hitting a gap in the pavement doing 20+mph, flying over the handlebars and sliding about 10 meters on my back!
In BC you have to wear a shirt for all races. Granted the shirt can be tiny. I too hate wearing a shirt when racing but I have to wear a sports bra, so I guess I’ll never get DQ’d
there was a guy running without a shirt at IMFL last saturday.
I thought he was just on the course, but he was actually racing and had a bib number.
I also saw quite a few guys running with ipods…
