Will STI shifters from a triple work on a double?

I have heard that the answer is yes but I don’t understand. The shifter clicks 3 times, how would I make it click only twice? I can’t see any sort of switch to flick. Sheldon Browns site, for the first time, hasn’t helped me. If it makes a difference these are Tiagra 9 speed.

Yes, they work. Just don’t click the third time, or you might drop the chain in the inside.

Yes (I’m pretty sure that includes Tiagra), but I can’t explain why.

You set the limit screw so that it doesn’t do that

yes. will work fine. i have it set up like that on my winter bike.
you can adjust the front derailleur so that the chain is in the small ring in the “1st click”, the big ring on the “2nd click” and the use the limit screws to prevent it from clicking up over the big ring on the “3rd click”. get it? your shifters will never actually be clicking a 3rd time because the limit screws will prevent it from doing so.

There are actually 4 positions (thus three clicks) on the triple shifter. On a triple they’re supposed to provide two positions for the center ring so you have a trim adjustment. I’ve got mine set up so that the big ring position = big ring, middle chainring position = small ring (this gives me trim asjustment while in the small ring) and the limit screw prevents drop-off if I accidenally click again (most of the time). I’m still careful to not click that last time, as I’ve dropped the chain a couple of times.

Perfect, The adjustment is on the deraileur not the shifter. That makes sense.
thanks
