Will Ironman return to San Diego?

Do any of you have any insight as to the possibility of a full IM coming back to San Diego? The two events held in Oceanside (2000 and 2001?) were, it seemed to me, very successful – they filled up quickly and were well-received by the community. I’ve heard otherwise about the full and half-IM attempts in Provo. Any sense that SD will get another shot at it?

Here’s an article that appeared on xtri.com’s website right before this years Hawaii Ironman, concerning a possible expansion of Ironman races.

As soon as I saw that, I e-mailed the author (Rob Dochery), and asked how real a possible return of a full Ironman to Oceanside was. His response was that everything in his article was pure speculation. Keep in mind, the speculation in that article of a return of Ironman to South Africa has become a reality.

I would love the return of a full distance Ironman to southern California. Who knows?
