Wildflower: Things My USAT Crew will be looking for

Hi All

I’m one of the two Head USAT Referees for Wildflower. I’m inchrage of the Olympic Distance crew but this is applicable to both races. I though it might help you to avoid penalties if you knew what all 15 of us were going to be looking for:

  1. Drafting: you need to be able to fit 2 bikes between your front wheel and the rear wheel of the guy in front of you to not get a penalty, inside of that and you have 15 seconds to pass [likewise if you get passed you have 15 seconds to drop back to that same 2 bike gap

  2. Overtaken: if you get passed you must drop back out of the draft zone in 15 seconds before attempting to pass the rider that just passed you

  3. Passing on the right is not allowed

  4. blocking: riding in any position except to the right side of the road which may impede the progress of a faster rider

  5. position foul: you need to stay to the right except when passing even if no one is around you. so don’t just cruise down the middle of the road

6: Centerline Dont Cross it unless you want a DQ

7: Abandoned Equipment: If you drop it stop and pick it up if was in your hand or you saw it fall out of a carrier and don’t stop it is a penalty. we lost the right to use 2 courses last year due to trash left post race.

  1. Mount / Dismout line at the transition. this is a safety issue. the volunteers are yelling at you to get off your bike for a reason please do it .there will be a referee at the line

  2. Helmets: Anytime during the race and anytime inside the Park, Racing or NOT you will be disqualified if seen riding without a securely fastened helmet

  3. Bar End Plugs. all holes in the handlebar and aerobar regardless of location or direction that they face must be solidly pluged failure to have the bars plugged is a DQ

lastly for those of you coming from other countries: nudity is not allowed in the transition area

I hope this helps clarify things

So, is domestic nudity outside of transition welcomed? Just joking… but, geees sometimes rules can take fun right out certain kinds of freedoms.

See ya at WF…

I beleive there is a special exception at the mile 4 run aid station of the long course

this is a completely self serving bump as I want to review as few penalty write-ups as I can.

Don’t worry, Eric, these things are sinking in. I had a dream last night about my bar-end plugs popping out mid-ride. No joke.

Just a question. Tried to reason it out but my biking knowledge isn’t very thorough. Why the bar plugs issue? What is the reason behind the rule? Safety? Thanks for explaining to the ignorant.

Ok Good Question

In a crash an unplugged bar end will take a "core sample out of anyone who lands on it. at a minimum you are looking at permanent disfigurement, worst case is it takes a core sample out of a vital organ and …

a plugged bar may impale but at least that can be stitched up in most situations

That makes sense. I guess the next question is… Why the hell wouldn’t you plug them?
