Wiggin's TT position change

I have noticed that Wiggins TT positon has become exceeding narrow compair to when he rode the BCF bike which had the wide extensions as used on the track. I presume the wide extension would be to deal with the bends on the track? & that the these were the only handlebar moulds available for the BCF road TT bike. Now he is ultra narrow hands together -

Does anyone know if he has spent much time in the tunnel working on positional changes?

You can be sure he has spent time in the tunnel, his position looks great and tunnel tested, I know Garmin has a history of tunnel testing. It makes sense that the wide position is to help handling on the track. I’m currently experimenting with a very narrow position and it’s more doable than I thought but is more of a challenge for handling.

Interesting to see how much he is tipping it, riding very forward (see previous photo to one linked). Also interesting to note another rider apparently drafting him!

Kind of shocking how bad some of the positions are, they remind me of a set of photos taken last year of a local training TT in my area, rather than a national championships in a TT-mad country. Guess they haven’t been reading all the information on how to field test your position put out there on places like the wattage forum, etc. by people like Chung, AC, and Tom A.

But hey, as someone with a limited engine, I’m happy for people to keep thinking you need to have a world class engine like wiggo to justify a world class position.

I guess he is well dialled handling wise in that position as he generally rides a 1080 front (when the CTT don stop or penalise him!).

Yes Matt Bottrill was drafting got DQ after posting the 2nd fasted time for drafting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4tmUz28vMA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRn0kBVJeRA&feature=related - he is by all accounts a nice guy who works for the Royal Mail and trains around that. Evidently he didn’t try to hide the fact but appologied afterwards - http://www.i-ride.co.uk/news.php?month=9&year=2009&id=126&direction=next . He obviously got rather carried away.

Good observation. I remember reading the report a few days ago. The third-placed finisher was later DQ’ed for drafting Wiggins

probably a bunch of considerations, including drag vs. power, riding the team pursuit, track vs. road, expected yaw angles, etc. I can see unique aspects of each event that could lead to a different position for pursuit vs. road TT.

He is also riding quite steep these days.

He is teamates with this guy…

Those brake levers are hideous

.

I just read the report…and all I can think is…“this dude is pretty studly if he can hold Wiggo’s Wheel at 5 yards back”!!!

Having a wider position on the bars allows for more leverage, which allows a rider to push more wattage for short periods of time on the track.

Track riders are nuts.

Remember the guy was the 3rd seed in the championships, he’s a very fast guy - he’s done 48:05 for a 25mile, which puts him 7th on the UK list (the competition record is 45:57 by Boardman - riding his lotus)

Pretty interesting that the 3rd, actually probably 4th in reality, as I expect Millar would’ve beaten him handily too, is so excited by Wiggins passing him that he gets carried away.

Do any of you guys ride with your elbows that close together? I have tried it and I just cannot breathe properly…plus wider feels much more stable to me. I guess if you spend 7 days a week in the saddle you can pull that off, but I sure can’t!

breathing isn’t a problem.

my upper back hurting a whole lot is

if I was being paid to go fast I’d think about HTFUing and doing it anyway

Yea no kidding!

It’s funny, but I ride roadie about 95% of the time and when TT time comes I just slap on my T2 draft legal bars and am as comfortable as can be…my saddle is 7.5cm behind the bb.

I have been told by my tri geek faithful that I ‘look weird’ and ‘you are wasting time’…

Oh well, whatever works.

well you MIGHT be just as comfy with the saddle 5cm forward and your bars a few cm down

well except for your neck

SPEED ISNT EASY!!

Hello rmur and All,

Is that a new Giro helmet - with an LG visor? It looks like it was designed after a catepillar with that series of bumps.

Also Wiggins head position is below his back which seems to be an important factor.

X2 I would have trouble breathing if my elbows were in very close, narrow hands don’t affect my breating much.

Cheers,

Neal

I would love to have a visor on my Adv2 helmet. I am curious about that too. As for his head position, thats the way its supposed to be. By tucking your head in between your shoulders, the tail of the helmet hugs the back a little better and makes you more aero. It took some gym time for me to get used to riding with my head in that position and my arms closer together. I have my aerobars about .5" off the stem. I love that he has ski bends and not those perfectly straight extensions

Hello viggen and All,

I have an LG visor on my Adv II helmet and it fits perfectly.

As mentioned in other threads use aluminum post screws - available at stationery stores.

Cheers,

Neal

Is he riding 170mm cranks?
