So, my wife has caught a bug and I’m worried that it is only a matter of time before I catch it. Unfortunately, I am in week three of a “big” cycle. I don’t want to miss the workouts, but I don’t want to stress my immune system so much that I’ll catch what my wife has.
Do I:
Train through the week as usual
Back off a bit, maybe make it two recovery weeks in a row (something is better then nothing as long as I’m healthy)
Sleep on the couch till she gets better (this may ruin my wife’s perception of the sport)
I have a wife and 3 kids, two in school, one that goes to a sitters.
It has been my experience that you just keep doing what you are doing and hope for the best. I try to do common sense stuff like make sure the kids don’t drink from my cup or something like that. I also take extra water and vitamin C. Don’t know if it helps or not. But I haven’t yet altered my training.
realize it’s a sport, aka recreation. Carry on with life as normal including normal workouts. If you get sick take a few days off, get better and proceed. Take care of your wife so she can take care of you if you get sick.
I’d suggest you make sure to 1) take care of your wife and 2) take care of your wife and 3) workout as normally as you can with the time you have leftover. Priorities!!
Don’t listen to the more sensible level headed suggested poster prior. Coming from a guy who got sick right before his big race last Sat and bombed don’t take any chances. You need to pull out all of the stops man. This calls for a training vacation, you need to isolate yourself form your sick wife and get the hell out of dodge. I’m thinking Mexico, or Hawaii- yeh hawaii and go ride the Kona bike course with a ton of open water swims. Go for it she will understand!!
If you have it - throw out any training plan that lays out all your workouts for the next 9 months. Those simple don’t work when you have family & work.
so lemme get this straight…your wife has a freaking cold and youre whining because you MAY get sick? have you nothing better to do with your time than worry about illnesses you dont have? your membership to the ‘Man Club’ has been permanently revoked.
Don’t touch your face, rub your eyes or nose, etc. Wash your hands every chance you get. Use alcohol based hand gel the rest of the time. Don’t share toothpaste etc. Then make sure you take care of her.
Seriously, I work as an EMT and am around sick people all the time. If you wash your hands a lot and don’t touch your face you’re FAR less likely to catch anything. Most people don’t even realize how often the touch their face, chew their pencil, touch the rim of a cup then drink, wash their hands then touch a door knob then rub their nose, etc. Sounds like living ‘paranoid’ but it quickly becomes habit and will lead to much less time spent sick… Your call!
Read this careful…what goes around, comes around, and I am not talking about the bug your wife has either. I am saying you too one day will be sick and you do not want a cranky wife taking care of you I just saying… Plus we cant be as big of cranky needy babies as men are when they are sick. :)-
For the record, I never considered putting training ahead of my wife. And, thanks to this thread, I’ve called home several additional times throughout the day to check up on her.
I guess it’s tough at times, to work so hard to build fitness and then to see the possibility of it going away so easily. This could happen, even if my wife weren’t sick.
No matter where you are, it can be looked at as not easy. Unless you think why you are hopefully doing this.
To stay in shape when it fits in with health and family priorities being first.
Just think if you were a FOP, going for money, and had issues.
