Any suggestions for wider tri shoes? I just finished IMWIS, and I had a terrible case of hot foot. It also happens on my longer rides. I’m reluctant to get rid of my new Shimano shoes (got them in June), but the pain when I got off the bike in Madison was too extreme. I don’t have especially wide feet, but I guess they are too wide for the TR-02s. Any suggestions for a new shoe choice?
I have a D width foot, but I have worn many of the shoes out there & felt hot spots. I think the Pearl Izumi Tri Carbon is excellent & has a nice wide forefoot. It is the most confortable shoe I have worn. I never wear socks with them. I did IMAZ in them & my feet felt great. You might also try the Specialized tri shoe. That would be my second choice.
I have a widish foot and have used carnac with some success. Some days I still have hot spots. But, they are wider than my previous shimanos. I’ve also tried on louis garneaus and would consider those as my next purchase, as they seemed good.
I am a 48. I wear an Asics 13 2E running shoe. My Sidi tri shoes and Genius 4’s in regular width are both great - and maybe a bit too wide as I have to crank them down almost all the way.
Are you sure it is the width of the shoe and not the socks (or lack of) or the insoles or something?

I’m not sure about that. Mut I’m going to do my best to find out before investing in another pair. Thanks.
The old version of the shimano tr 01 have a much wider carbon sole. Possibly the widest of any standard tri shoe. Some stores still have them. Shop around. Make sure you try them as they run a full size smaller than the 02’s. You may also want to try moving your pedal spindle back, and or buying a good set of insoles to put in the shoes.
I have above avg wide feet and have felt your hotspots. The two brands I find to work the best are Northwave’s and Carnacs.
Mmm, that’s a good call about NW. I’ve got NW road shoes and they fit very nicely. But I read somewhere that the tri shoes are basically pointless. Have you used their tri shoes?
Did you ever think your hot feet were attributed to anything other than shoe width?
I have a pair of the yellow and blue tri shoes around somewhere that I used until after IMAZ. They were 4 years old and rather flexible. I just ordered a pair of Northwave Genetix (sp?) 3 straps which will be both my road racing and tri shoes. I could not find a two strap carbon soled tri shoe that fit my foot. My arches are so high I could not even get my feet into several models including Nike, specialized and shimano
I had a buddy who went on a search for wide bike shoes (sorry, not tri shoes) and settled on some WIDE Sidi Genius 5’s. Then he decided he wasn’t fitting in them after all so I lent him my regular Pearl Izumi’s (Carbon Vortex?). He loved my 2 year old shoes so much and I fit better in his that we swapped!
I have a wide foot (E width) and wear 13 Asics running shoe . I had Sidi and went to Carnac after the Sidis killed me with hot spots (despite squirting them with water to see if they would stretch at the hot spot). The Carnacs wre indeed wider but the toes box tapered down so that I had hot spots in the toes after 40-50 miles. I recently purchased a size 48 Shimano TR02 and they have been great. The toe box does seem little too wide but the rest of the shoe fits snuggly and the hot spots are gone. It is a great and new experience for me to ride without foot pain.
