Why Triathletes dont Dope

Everyone gets to be an expert on forums, I guess that is democracy

It’s nice to believe this, but also very naive. All you have to do is watch Elite AG waves in races and watch the blatant drafting to know that there are people who will cheat to win, especially since they aren’t being marshalled or tested.

But as a clean athlete, I know that an Ironman or triathlon isn’t a stage race, and I have to believe that on that one day I can compete against someone who dopes. Tomorrow they’d kill me, and the day after that. But on that one day, I can beat them.

now who’s being naive ;^)

San Diego, probably the tri center of this country, is just a quick trip across the border to Tiajuana where you can find pretty much anything you want. Access isn’t the issue, if you want the stuff, you can find it.

Ken Caminiti (league MVP and dead now) admitted that’s where he used to go to get his 'roids when he was playing for the Padres.

I agree…I think there are age groupers who have doped or do dope. They can do the most easily detected form of blood doping and not get caught, b/c they are not being tested.

I know that one of the Ball State HP Lab guys tried EPO a while back…I’m not sure if they were doing research with EPO or not, but anyways his VO2 went from 42 ml/kg/min to 52 ml/kg/min in one week!! He was not competing in anything at the time, just wanted to see how good the stuff worked.

And thats why triathletes dont dope

In the words of Michale Corleone…

Who’s being naive Kay?

Their times are just average in all three disciplines,

Define ā€œaverage.ā€

How much of a difference do you think these legal OTC hormone precursors actually make? If it’s a banned substance, it’s a banned substnce but I wouldn’t lose any sleep over someone in my age group taking prohormones. Compared to organised, professional blood doping, anabolic steroid use and EPO, this is very, very small potatoes. Not even comparable.

Never claimed to be an expert, but I know enough about pharmacology to know how silly it is to compare systematic, professional doping to grabbing a jar of prohormones from the local GNC. But go on expressing that naive point of view if you like. That’s democracy.

ā€œthe fact is that some triathletes do dope, both pro and AG.ā€

    • I race clean, 100%.
Know where I can get some really good shit? It’s gotta be good though. If it won’t get me a Kona slot, then why bother.

With online pharmas, pretty much anything you want has become OTC…it takes about 2min to find a website that sells EPO, GH, and whatever you want…For bags of blood, well that’s harder
.

True, in the UK you can get as many spanish steroids as you can order over the internet. I’ve been looking at GNC’s website, though, and for some reason I can’t find them there.

Too much beer in the British 'roids? :stuck_out_tongue:

Some work really really well, but with the new laws in the USA they are all illegal now. Sometimes a small outfit will sell some for a while anyway.

Must be something like that…

There have been a number of ā€˜prohormone’ products introduced over the last 5 years that are as effective as oral steroids. M1T comes to mind, these were no joke. These products usually got pulled from the market after a few months, but there was no mistaking that they really worked.

Oh, and I put the ā€˜prohormone’ in quotes because that was really just a semantic argument, they were just new methylated steroids akin to dianabol, etc.

There is so much stuff around, it’s hard to know what is legal, what is not, harder to know what works what doesn’t and impossible to know if they will yield a positive test or not considering the quality control done on them…in short, stay clear…

Can you name anyone?

I know a few of those guys, well at least the hold outs from the early 90’s

Don,
During the 2002 season Hans De Clerq from Lotto-Adecco walked with me into a GNC in Philadelphia and pointed out several products which are considered doping products and according to him harder to get in Europe. That came after I asked them the ā€œhow widespread is doping?ā€ question.

I also did not say anything specific about Pro Tour practices but general cheating and doping, nor does this thread.

While it is nice to believe that our sport is clean, until you live in So.Cal and know a few people who train with/are friends of various pro’s, you never realize how easy it is to pop down to Mexico for a refill on your human growth hormone supply, etc.

Since moving to So.Cal I’ve heard some VERY disturbing rumors of icons in our sport over the years. I believe that it is almost as sad that we aren’t harder on dopers in triathlon, and any corporations, organizations, etc. who cover it up. Other than weather, there is a very nice advantage to training in San Diego at certain times of the year.
