Why the need to criticize and downplay the results of fellow triathletes?

Hi Everyone. I just recently started reading Slowtwitch forums, and have thoroughly enjoyed all of the wisdom, advice, and humor that is present on a daily basis here. The one thing that I’m compelled to comment on, and I don’t normally like getting caught up in this sort of thing, is the amount of what seems to be negative comments on here from time to time about athletes, or the need of some posters to somehow belittle other athlete’s performances.

Why all of the focus on the fact that Roth “must be short?” Why all of the focus on “so and so said x person was drafting off of y?”

I have been lucky enough to be around quite a few elite athletes, and know that these people pour their lives into giving their absolute best effort at each race they go to. Why do we feel the need to try and downplay their results? Why is there all of the focus on proving that Hellreigel (sp?) and Macca couldn’t have ridden as fast as they did (4:16), or that there is no way that they could’ve ran a 2:45 at that course (or in Peter Jacobs’ case, a 2:44…) Never mind the fact that Hellreigel and Macca are two amazing athletes, the weather conditions aren’t nearly as severe as Hawaii (where it has been shown to be possible to ride 4:18 in much more severe heat/humidity…) and 2:45 is a realistic marathon split for some of those guys on just about any marathon course. Especially with the kind of crowd support you get at races over there. And, honestly, who cares what the exact distance of any course is…you know that all of the competitors tried to get from start to finish as fast as they could!

Plus, I think that everyone, not just the top guys at each race, deserve more respect than having the only thing they see about the race they just did on this forum as being a thread trying to discredit the race they just killed themselves at by saying that it was “short.” There were a hell of a lot of incredible athletes that raced as hard as they possibly could, over what they were assured was a ironman distance course, and they deserve all the respect in the world for going out there and putting on a great show.

And no, for the record, I didn’t race Roth! I feel the same about any race and just think people that were in a race, regardless of which race or the supposed distance, deserve respect.

I suppose that it makes me sad when people feel the need to denigrate other people’s performances, and gossip about athletes they don’t even know. I don’t see why we can’t all appreciate each athlete’s performances on an individual basis and appreciate how beautiful of a sport this really is. Whether it is a 1 hour sprint race, an ITU race, or an ironman event, the performances of the athletes involved deserve our respect. Regardless of their nationality, sex, previous results, previous interview statements, wife’s dog’s mother’s hair color (you get the point!), whatever, each result that you see on a race results page has a story to go with it. And every result has at least something to be respected and applauded. We are all in this sport because we love it, whether you are fast or slow, young or old, and sometimes I think it is easy to forget that very important point.

Now if someone at a race has been directly disrespectful to you, or to someone around you, then feel free to go ahead and voice your opinion on that instance, that isn’t what this is about at all. Every athlete in the world (myself included) has been upset by the actions of another athlete while in the middle of a sporting event at one time or another. That comes with racing and going as hard as you can. I feel this is completely different than being an “armchair critic” as an internet forum is perfect for breeding these. I, like everyone, enjoy race stories. As long as it is based on fact and not rumor.

There is my rant for the day…. All of this, I’m sure, doesn’t apply to most people on here, but I feel much lighter with it off my chest!

Whatever, you suck! Drafter!

Oh wait, are you slower than me? Cause if you are then you shouldn’t be allowed at events cause you’re not racing!

Amen!

Because if we complimented everyone they would get big heads and the threads would be way to short.

We can’t just agree on stuff thats too easy. How many times can you Wow macca had a good race… thats boring.

Besides, its not like anyone ever critiques other athletes after their performances its definilty just slowtwitch… that should be pink if i knew how…

Because that is what it is like to be a type-A personality, stuck in the life constraints of a weekend warrior. It’s easier for many here to downplay the accomplishment of others when you know that there is no way your life would ever allow you do experience anything more than age group success in sport. It’s typical weekend-warrior behaviour, amplified by a bunch of type A’s.

I believe that reading this forum too much can leave you with a jaded perspective…I used to think that finishing an IM was an accomplishment, until I “learned” that you’re no good unless you go under 12 hours. Fortunately, those around me still have their feet planted firmly on the ground. I for one actually like to stick around until the 17hr mark, and cheer for those “less deserving according to SlowTwitch” 16 hour finishers…I know, it makes me unworthy of full ST snobby status, but I think it’s fun.

In short, this place is full of type-A asses who are unhappy that they’ll only ever be age group finishers…but on the other hand, there are also a lot of good people here too.

An awful lot of insecurity on this forum as well. It’s easy to see how few are actually comfortable in their own skin.

You nailed it. Insecurity plus obsessive/compulsive personalities make for a bad combination. We’ve got lots of those here on ST.

Does anyone else see the irony in this thread??

Man, is this isn’t a setup to pre-explain why your forthcoming race report and race results aren’t as great as you were hoping for, and that you are trying to do advance damage control, then I don’t know what is!

I think this is more of an Internet phenomenom than a Slowtwitch forum phenomenom. People address the critical point quickly, and often shooting from the hip (guilty!), without always adequately or accurately providing a frame of reference. A normal conversation would allow for more complete responses.

Case in point, yes Roth is probably short, the only real importance is that comparison of fastest times between courses is then a problem. It is no less of a race, and winning it is no less of a feat. I leave it to someone else to provide the rest of the frame of reference.

That’s why I come here in fits and spurts: 1 month on/5-6 months off. Works pretty well.

I’ve found myself doing the same in the last few months…checking in a few days a month at most, and staying away from reading all the drama. I’ve actually found that I enjoy the sport a lot more - for some reason, I find that ST takes the fun out of it.

yes
.

How true this is! I also find that when I’m here, I’m usually ending up bummed out and down instead of enthused.

I think much has to do with the typical (type A) personalities here. I think as a group, triathletes, cyclists, and runners (I’m talking about those who race to win, pr, etc., not those who run to finish) are slightly annoyed the the way society has taken to rewarding mediocrity. I ran a 2 hr. sprint while I was sick this year, and got a freakin medal. A sprint. 19.5 miles total.
There needs to be a competitive differential for a type a personality to thrive in sports. being MOP just doesn’t cut it. That is the stance that most people on here would agree with. That is why they are here, not at BT. (not jacking BT, i use their logs, and even post every now and then)
As far as disrespecting the pros and 400 page posts about the incorrect distance of such and such race, now that’s just people b1thchin cuz their bored.
If you can’t stomach the atmosphere, there are plenty of websites that will say, “Oh, it’s alright that you didn’t make it to the turnaround before cutoff, just head back now and finish the run, we’ll have a medal waiting for you, triathlete.”

In total agreement with you. I would also add that some top agers make complaints about the “b” pros only because they are so close but far enough from being one. I call very few triathletes “pros”

I think it’s easier for people to poke at others issues then to deal with their own. Certain people take joy out of knocking others down. It’s a horrible thing to engage in and I wish we’d see less of it. However it comes out a lot online because everyone is hiding behind a computer monitor.

I find it amusng to read threads from people trying to downplay others achievements, it says alot more about them than they realise!

I am and will always be MOP, that is not a reflection of my desire to be competitive, simply a reflection of my ability and the time constraints put upon me by the rest of my life. I admire those people who devote themselves to fulfilling their potential as athletes whilst still holding down a career, but I have much more admiration for those people who have never been sporty and made a choice to get up and do something about their lifestyle. There is a lot more bitching on this forum than on the other forums I frequent, however there are also threads that are fantastic and full of useful information, the reason I continue to visit the forum is for these threads.

Some of the other forums have ‘a’ type people on them and have their share of very fast atheletes and yet they manage not to bitch as much, not suggesting any explanations I just find it interesting to note.

i just read through the “roth must be short” thread. seems to me that there was only one poster being somewhat negative about any athletes, and most of the discussion was around whether the course was actually short or not.

I am on the Slowtwitch plan:

Base - I spend every waking moment on the forum reading all of the threads.

Build - I contribute by posting to the forum and get sucked into an arguments.

Taper - I have to back away before I punch my computer.

“yes”

i would like to take this opportunity to bitch about the complaining about the belittlers. does anyone want to harangue me for it
