Christmas is often abbreviated to X-Mas.
Why? Is it a functional thing? An attempt at secularization?

In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter X(chi), is the first letter of Christ (×ñéóôüò). Since the mid-sixteenth century ×, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ.
