Now now, I don’t want the kitty’s fur to be scorched!
Sometimes the wind helps keep it flat, If you live on the east coast and have a west wind the ocean will be flat inshore but rolling offshore. Ocean currents can have an impact as well.
yes, east coast - MDI, Maine!!! Hmmm now I’ve got to figure out which direction the wind is blowing. At 6am the water was perfectly flat and now it’s got a few waves in it. I watched last night as the sun was setting and it calmed down (must’ve lost its fizz and gone flat ![]()
Ha, ha! Classic! A cat-hater on ST!
Can we put the cat into the bucket of boiling water to the left?
prevailing wind on the east coast is from the southwest. You’ll notice that your weather always comes up from Massachusetts. This is why Connecticut has such terrible air, we get all of NYC’s secondhand smog.
Yes Sir, you win.
Woohoo!!! My 7th grade science teacher will be glad I remembered something ![]()
Now…what do I win ![]()
Globally, the earth has what are called prevailing winds. These winds are the natural wind patterns caused by huge ocean currents and huge land masses. It’s basically convection like in the earlier pics

where blue is cold, red is warm. Winds always go from cold to warm. Semi-locally, you get weather patterns. In the north pacific you get storms in the winter and calmer conditions in the summer. These storm systems generally follow the track of the prevailing winds, but these storms move high and low pressures all over the place causing localized storms and winds. Conversely, in North Americas summer (southern hemispheres winter) the southern seas generate the storms which generally follow their respective prevailing winds. As to why the ocean is calmer in the morning, the other posts regarding convection are spot on. The only anomolies to this pattern occur when a ridge of high or low pressure enter a region and disturb the regular convective gradients.
Oooh, pretty picture!
It’s simple…they call it high tide, low tide
Well, lake water is calmer in the morning, and as far as I know, lakes don’t really have tides.
A rising tide, however, is to blame for lapping up every single sandcastle I made this afternoon.
Well, technically they do, but they’re inperceptable.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. This was on a lake about 8 in the morning…

Hmmm that is a big wave! Like a tsunami!
The ocean is flat now, it’s 8:30pm (whoops half an hour past my bedtime!!!) and was flat this morning, I wasn’t here in the middle of the day because WORK started, darn it!!! I usually go in the water to soak my legs after I run, but when I got back this morning, the tide was such that I’d have had to wade through too much seaweed. Scared of slipping, scared of seaweed, no “ice bath” today. I hope I’m not too sore tomorrow morning - we are running up Cadillac Mountain at 4am so we’ll be at the top as the sun comes up. Tomorrow is the summer solstice and the Cadillac summit is the first place the sun touches on the east coast
I am sooooo excited!!! my run friends come up with the coolest stuff to do. I love it here.
I Googled Cadillac Mountain and found this pic…

That run is going to be so worth it!
That’s it.
Ohhhmygod I am so freakin excited, how am I going to sleep tonight?! I am a little ball of blonde hyperactivity ![]()
My son began his thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail in Maine on Katahdin - a big lumbering broad slouch of a mountain that lies in Baxter State Park and glowers over miles and miles of surrounding territory - the mountains of Maine are spectacular OLD OLD OLD mountains that have greeted sunrises for aeons - Cadillac should be a cool ascent and a wonderful way to greet a new day, especially a summer solstice!
Enjoy it -
Hmm. I thought the Appalachain trail started in Georgia and went to Maine! Best wishes for your son’s hike, even though he’s doing it backward ![]()
My Solstice Run - perfect. You know the line - when the sun comes up you’d better be running - like that.
